Year 9 News

It has been a busy start to the term for our year 9 cohort! We’re thrilled to share some of the highlights and reminders from the past few weeks.
Year 9 Camp
Melbourne Discovery Camp
Our year 9 camp was a highlight! Students enjoyed a range of activities of indoor rock climbing, MCG visit, Eureka Skydeck and lots of shopping. Thank you to the staff for their hard work, and to our students for their enthusiasm and willingness to try new things.
“Melbourne Camp was a once-in-a-lifetime experience that was truly amazing. I'm going to start by appreciating the activities this camp allowed us to do. I absolutely loved the Eureka Skydeck, even if the elevator was a nightmare (Ground Floor to 89 in less than 15 seconds is the craziest feeling). The top had a view that made my jaw drop. Another amazing activity we did was the Ice Skating! I've never ice skated in my life but this camp gave the opportunity to learn how, and it was definitely the best activity there. Other things this camp did perfect was the food, as I didn't dislike a single dinner! I loved the restaurants, I loved the way we were served, and I absolutely am craving that food again. Chinese, Italian, Greek, American, all absolutely delicious. We did a heap more, like roaming the city and having shopping frenzies for hours. If I get the opportunity to do this camp again, I'd do it a hundred times over. This camp has made me want to live in the city in the future with the amount of activities, jobs, and other fun there is to have there. Take me back... NOW!” - Ryan
KAAP AFL Game
During week 3, our Kurnai Aspiring Athletes had the opportunity to head to the MCG to watch Hawthorn vs Collingwood. This was an incredible chance for our students to experience the atmosphere of a live AFL game at one of Australia’s most iconic sporting venues. It was also a great opportunity for our aspiring athletes to see elite athletes in action!
NAIDOC Week
We were proud to celebrate NAIDOC week with a range of activities that honoured Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander culture, history, and achievements. Some of our students attended a special celebration session at our FLO campus, where they connected with peers, participated in cultural activities, and deepened their understanding of this year’s NAIDOC theme.
Maths Games Day
On Friday of week 2, we were lucky enough to send 4 Year 9 students to attend a local math games competition. Students played maths-oriented games and puzzles against several other schools from the Gippsland area. These competitions were a great test of their problem-solving skills, teamwork, and quick thinking. Our Year 9 students represented our school proudly and came away with plenty of new math strategies.
“Me and three other students went to Mirboo North Secondary College on the 1st of August to represent Year 9 Churchill, Kurnai, at a Maths Games Day. There was multiple different schools that we were competing against. It was very fun playing games with the other schools and it was also interesting and impressive seeing how the other teams solved the puzzles. Although our team didn't win, we still all had fun. Thanks to Mirboo North Secondary College for having us for the day.” - Kiana
Don Valley Alpine School
Congratulations to the five students selected to attend the Don Valley Leadership School. This unique experience will give them the chance to build independence, develop leadership skills, and connect with students from across the state. We can’t wait to hear all about their journey when they return!
School Wide Positive Behaviour Support (SWPBS)
It has been fantastic to see students working hard and showing determination to display all of Kurnai’s four pillars. Keep up the great work!

Expectations
As a cohort, we have been focusing on key expectations for our Year 9 students. The three main areas we are working on are: arriving to class on time, bringing all necessary equipment to class, and wearing the correct uniform.
Over the last few weeks, the year 9 students have been struggling to wear the correct uniform.
Just a reminder that students need to wear the correct shoes (Closed shoes). The following shoes are not a part of Kurnai’s clothing policy: Ugg boots, Crocs, Thongs, sandals, and steel cap boots.
Students also need to ensure that they are wearing either white or blue jumpers underneath their uniform.
