Message from our

Campus Principal

Welcome back to Term 3!

The campus has had a really positive start to the term. With this being a shorter one, students have quickly settled back into routine and are making the most of every opportunity both in and outside the classroom. It’s also been a busy and exciting few weeks, with camps, excursions, sporting events, and a celebration of culture through our NAIDOC Week activities.

NAIDOC Week Celebrations

This year’s NAIDOC Week theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy, was celebrated with pride across all Kurnai campuses.

At Churchill, students took part in a lunchtime BBQ, Indigenous games, wristband giveaways, and a whole-campus assembly including a Welcome to Country, Smoking Ceremony, and valuable discussions.

A big thank you to our Elders, Koorie Education Support Officers, and all involved in helping us recognise and understand this year's NAIDOC theme.

Year 8 & 9 Camps

Our Year 8 and 9 students recently took part in two fantastic camps:

Year 9s travelled to Melbourne for a week of independence, city life, and hands-on learning. Highlights included visiting Eureka Skydeck, the MCG, and navigating public transport — many for the first time!

Year 8s headed to Phillip Island, where they experienced a range of team-building challenges, bush cooking, beach visits and more. The feedback from students and staff was overwhelmingly positive — well done to all who attended!

KAAP Excursion – AFL Game

Our Kurnai Aspiring Athlete Program (KAAP) students headed off on Thursday, the 7th of August, to watch Collingwood and Hawthorn play at the MCG. KAAP students previously saw the Hawthorn team training in term 2, so this game allowed the students to see the players translate their training into gameplay.

Thanks to the staff for organising and supporting this memorable experience.

Sports

Congratulations to all students who recently represented Kurnai at the Wellington Division Athletics Carnival. It was great to see our students striving for personal bests, encouraging one another, and showing great sportsmanship. A number of students have now qualified for the next level of competition – good luck!

Well done to the Year 8 Boys who recently represented the school in the Gippsland Region Netball competition. While the final results may not have been what they had hoped for, the team displayed outstanding sportsmanship and excellent teamwork throughout the day. Their positive attitude and commitment to giving their best effort made the school proud.

NAPLAN Results

Year 7 and 9 families will have received their NAPLAN results this week. We are proud of the effort our students put into these assessments. These results help us to identify areas of strength and where we can provide additional support. If you have any questions about your child’s NAPLAN report, please reach out to their English or Maths teacher.

Learning and Assessment

As this is a shorter term, some assessments will begin from Week 7. Students are currently focused on building knowledge and refining skills across all subjects. Teachers are working hard to ensure students are well supported and have clarity about what success looks like in their upcoming tasks.

Learning Behaviour Updates

Our students’ strong results from Term 2 showed consistent effort and growth. Families will receive Learning Behaviour Updates later this month. Students are also using R&R (Resilience and Relationships) lessons to reflect on their progress and set new goals for the remainder of the term.

Attendance Reminder

With winter bugs starting to settle down, we’re hopeful for improved attendance across the board. Every day at school makes a difference – especially in a short term where assessments come around quickly. Please remember to log absences in Compass or contact the office if your child needs catch-up work while away.
