It has been a wonderfully creative term in the Art Room, with students exploring a wide range of materials, techniques and inspirations. Students were very excited to begin working at our brand-new art tables and sit on the matching stools - a long-awaited upgrade!
Our Prep students finished off their Eric Carle unit by experimenting with warm and cool coloured texture paintings. From their cool-toned papers, they cut out caterpillar shapes and practised their fine motor skills by carefully snipping ovals, feet, antennae and eyes. They also created oil-resist name artworks using white oil pastel and watercolour washes, and began making extra flowers that will be used to decorate the Arts Extravaganza later in the year.
Students in Grades 1/2 also completed the Eric Carle unit, creating vibrant flower artworks by combining warm and cool coloured textures. They practised oil-resist painting, cut and assembled petals, stems and leaves, and arranged them on a watercolour background. From there, they launched into a printmaking unit, exploring unusual tools like bubble wrap and Lego. They experimented with shades of blue to create ocean prints, bold fish-scale patterns, and stamped textures to layer into their designs.
In Grades 3/4, students put the finishing touches on their junk relief sculptures, preparing them for display. They then began a unit on geodes, experimenting with a wide variety of materials—poster paint, markers, crayons, pencil, glitter and paint sticks—to create layered 2D artworks. This led into a new yarn painting unit, where students selected a landscape and brought it to life by collaging with different types of yarn and fabric.
Our senior students in Grades 5/6 finally completed their in-the-round junk sculptures, ready for exhibition. They then moved into a landscape unit, studying Vincent Van Gogh and textile artist Monika Kinner to compare their styles and approaches. Using these artists as inspiration, students created their own yarn and fabric landscapes. Many also revisited their Ramadan quilling projects, refining them in preparation for display.
Looking ahead to Term 4, all year levels will be busy making costumes, props and set pieces for the Arts Extravaganza concert. It’s shaping up to be a colourful and exciting finale to the year!
