Year 5/6 Report
Term 3 2025
Well done on another successful term! We have had a busy term with fun events such as Book Week, Writers Festival and our Grade 5/6 camp. The students have worked hard and shown great growth both academically and socially.
Writing
This term in Writing, students created Explanation texts to inform their audience on the lifecycle of a living thing or a natural disaster. They conducted their own research and included sequential information and labelled diagrams. Students were able to publish their finished reports in a variety of different ways including Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and as a Poster.
Students then completed Hybrid texts. Hybrid texts are 2 text types combined: a narrative and information report. Using the knowledge gained from their explanation text students created a story about a Natural disaster or animal which included real facts. Students published their writing in the form of story books with front covers and illustrations.
Writers Festival
Thank you to all the parents that joined us to celebrate our Writers Festival this year. Students have spent many hours preparing for event.
Reading
Throughout the term grade 5/6 students have continued to build skills as readers by learning about text connections, understanding the features and purpose of hybrid texts, analysing and critiquing texts. As a class each week we analyse the style of writing, the words the author has selected and structure of the text types. Once students can analyse a text type, they are better equipped to offer well thought out critiques about the success and weakness of books they are reading.
In mathematics this term, our Grade 5/6 students have been building their knowledge of geometry by naming and constructing both 2D and 3D shapes with accuracy. They have also been learning how to use protractors to measure angles and identify them by name, deepening their understanding of the properties of shapes. Alongside this, students have been explicitly taught how to follow the problem-solving process—breaking down questions, identifying what is being asked, and selecting the most effective strategies to find solutions. These skills are helping students become more confident, strategic, and independent mathematicians.
Students have been researching the Australian population as well as the differences in the demographic, economic, social and cultural characteristics of countries across the world. Students have used a range of resources such as an Atlas and data from the Australian Bureau of Statistics to compare aspects of selected countries and cultures. Students have selected a country of choice from North America or Europe to complete a research presentation.
Our Grade 5/6 camp to CYC Forest Edge which students recently returned from was an amazing camp filled with adventure, teamwork, and plenty of fun! Students loved the thrill of the flying fox, the challenge of mountain boarding, testing their balance on the low ropes course, and getting hands-on with making damper. Evenings were just as exciting, with movie nights, karaoke sessions, and lots of dancing and singing that brought everyone together. Camp was a wonderful opportunity for students to step outside their comfort zones, build resilience, and strengthen friendships, all while creating memories that will be treasured for years to come. A big thank you to our staff and families for helping make this such a successful experience!
