Celebrating the growth in our wonderful children on each learning level...
This term in English, we've been exploring the important theme of 'Taking care of Earth'. Through stories, discussions, and writing, we've learned how our everyday choices can help protect the planet. We've talked about sustainability, the impact of pollution, and how small actions - like turning off lights or reusing materials - can make a big difference. We've also expanded our vocabulary with words like reuse, reduce, recycle, and respect. This week’s highlight was a hands-on activity where we created our very own 'Earth Buddy' using recycled paper. It was a fun and meaningful way to put our learning into action and celebrate the idea of giving old materials a new life!

In Science we have been learning about Simple Machines, such as a ramps, pulleys and wheels. Over the last two weeks, Year 1 students participated in two in-visits. During Taskworks, they worked in groups to construct a robot, car and train. During the Simple Machines in-visit, students used a hammer and nails to make their own wooden car. We've had a lot of fun working with and learning about simple machines!

Our Year 2 students thoroughly enjoyed their in-visit with Mark Wilson linked to our English Unit: Author Studies. Mark has a passion for helping animals to live long and happy lives on this planet. He delivers these messages through the books that he writes, including Journey of the Sea Turtle, Migaloo: The White Whale and Animals. To support our students to retain the information he shared, he took them through a directed drawing of a Loggerhead Sea Turtle and dolphin. Mark was very impressed with the amount of knowledge our students knew about native animals and animals that live all over the world. We look forward to writing stories inspired by Mark's love of animals and expressing important messages through writing.

Our Year 3 scientists have been busy exploring the fascinating topic of Weather and Climate. They investigated how different weather patterns form, created mini models of the water cycle in a bag to observe evaporation and condensation, and conducted hands-on experiments to test the effects of wind. Be sure to ask your child how a hot air balloon floats, chances are they can now give you a mini science lesson the next time one drifts across the Melbourne sky.

All the Year 4's had a wonderful time on their excursion to the Yarra River last week! As we cruised down the Yarra, we passed many iconic Melbourne landmarks such as the MCG, the Royal Botanic Gardens and Rod Laver Arena. Along the way, the students spotted features we had discussed in class, including rubbish traps that help keep the river clean, as well as bike paths and BBQ areas where people can enjoy the riverbank. Captain Dave shared lots of fascinating facts about the Yarra, and the students were full of questions and observations. The Year 4s are now excited to continue their learning by exploring other rivers around the world and comparing them to our own Yarra River.

The Year 5 students enjoyed an exciting Maps and Mayhem incursion on Wednesday. The incursion supported our novel this term where the main character's Dad is a cartographer and there is a big focus on maps. The students were split into teams where they used iPads to scan QR codes and they then had to solve the clue which took them to the next location once solved. The puzzles were hidden amongst the playground, the library and the school foyer area. The incursion encouraged teamwork, communication, and critical thinking. Students raced between locations, sharing ideas and making quick decisions to find the next clue. Everyone had great fun!

Grade 6 students brought incredible spirit and energy to our Sports Day! They caught the tram to Murphy’s Reserve, representing their houses one last time in mini games and challenges. It was fantastic to see students encouraging each other, celebrating successes, and showing great sportsmanship throughout the day. Whether students were running, jumping, or simply cheering from the sidelines, everyone played their part in making the day a success. A huge thank you to all the students for bringing their enthusiasm, teamwork, and positive energy. Days like these remind us what it means to come together as a community, support one another, and finish the year strong. What a fantastic way for our Year 6s to celebrate their final Sports Day at SMPS! A special congrats to our Year 6 students in the green house, Ferrars, who celebrated their first win in SMPS history.
