Middle School News

Sit back, relax and enjoy this amazing celebration of the wonderful Middle School students!

IMAX/Museum Excursion

Last week, we enjoyed a fantastic day in the city, visiting the Melbourne Museum and watching Our Beautiful Planet 3D at IMAX. Our journey began with a train from Sandringham, a platform change at Richmond, and arrival at Parliament Station. Throughout the excursion, the students were outstanding, true role models who embodied the values we uphold at Sacred Heart. During our time at the museum, we explored the Forest Garden Walk, Dynamic Earth, and the Dinosaur Exhibition, making it a day filled with learning, discovery, and memorable experiences.

This week, the students paid their respects, condolences and appreciation to the local Police station through letter writing.

Father's Day

We extend a special thanks to all the amazing fathers, father figures and special people who joined us on Friday. The ¾ students had the privilege of performing for the special guests.

Skiing Sensation

From fishing to skiing, Cole has all bases covered. We congratulate Cole on representing Sacred Heart last weekend in Mt Hotham on the slopes. Cole is currently on the 'Black Diamond' slopes, one of the hardest in the country. For someone who hasn't done many ski lessons and only started recently, to say we are proud of you, Cole, is an understatement!

Year Three

English

Over the past fortnight, the Year 3 students have been working hard across their Literacy skills block, focusing on the morphographs form (to shape) and ject (to throw), as well as practising cursive handwriting, improving reading fluency, and learning irregular words. In their Knowledge Rich Curriculum, they explored the Moon, investigating its eight phases, how it was formed, and the ways scientists study it today. In Writing, students have been developing their use of dialogue, with particular attention to punctuating speech correctly. They have extended their skills to writing conversations between two characters, using new lines when speakers change. To extend ourselves, the students were challenged to create dialogue between at least 2 people, use an appositive and show their knowledge of what we’ve learnt thus far in our Knowledge Rich Curriculum. As you can see, they did absolutely amazing!

These skills will greatly support their growth in Narrative writing.

Maths

In Maths, the students have been introduced to 3D shapes, identifying their key characteristics, classifying them and using nets to form 3D shapes. They have extended themselves to explore more complex 3D shapes like octagonal prisms, cuboids etc. They have continued working on Timestable Rockstars and are expected to be doing this for 10 minutes a night as a part of homework.

Year Four

English

The Year 4 students continue to work extremely hard in English, showing great enthusiasm and persistence in their learning. With a structured literacy program on a tight schedule, they are consistently producing work to an exceptional standard. Students are developing their skills across reading, writing, speaking, and listening daily, with a strong focus on comprehension, vocabulary, and grammar. Recently, they have been introduced to morphographs such as phob, meaning fear, and meter, meaning to measure, which has extended their knowledge of how words are built and their meanings. They are also learning to use punctuation effectively, including ellipses, to create impact in their writing. Their ability to reflect on feedback and apply it to future tasks is a credit to their effort and commitment.

Maths

In Maths, the Year 4 students have been exploring the topic of Location. They have worked on mapping skills, including reading and interpreting coordinates, and using these to describe positions on a grid. This has helped them develop their spatial awareness and ability to communicate mathematical ideas clearly. Prior to this, the students completed their unit on Fractions, where they focused on converting between fractions and decimals. They practised recognising and writing notations for tenths, hundredths, halves, and quarters, while also comparing and ordering fractions.
