Year 2 Mainstream

Celebrating Learning

What we have been up to:

Term 3 continues to be exciting and full of learning! We have been learning about celebrations around the world, through new vocabulary and books. We have learned different ways people celebrate and continue to reflect on the ‘Key Questions’ for our learning this term:

  • How and why do we celebrate?
  • Why are celebrations important and how are they passed down from one generation to another?
  • What can I learn about different cultures through their celebrations?

Students will keep sharing their interviews with someone from their community about their favourite celebration over the next two weeks. This project is open in how students present, so far we have seen some great video  interviews.

Maths:

We are further developing our understanding of multiplication and division. Over the last few weeks we have looked at sharing objects into equal groups and different ways of representing these groups including number sentences and arrays. Students were set a task to develop a garden for Queen Arraya. She wanted a veggie garden first, then a beautiful orchard and finally the most amazing flower garden anyone has ever seen. Students needed to work out how they could arrange each garden bed in an array.

We have also continued looking at dates and seasons, identifying and marking special dates and celebrations on our term calendar. Our measurement unit has begun with exploring the area of objects within the classroom and linking it to our exploration of arrays.

English:

Students are finishing the Little Learners Love Literacy Stage 7.3 sounds in phonics. These sounds include: "oo" as in goose, "ow" as in cow, "ou" as in loud, "oy" as in boy, "oi" as in coin, "oo" as in oops. Students are also looking at "or" sounds, including spelling patterns such as sport, shawl, talk, store and autumn.

Students have been writing incredibly creative stories, developing their characters, settings and problems. Many students are working on their entries for the school Book Week writing competition. They have been responding to texts to prompt their ideas, exploring different planning templates, drafting, revising and editing.

What’s to come in the next two weeks:

Students will be presenting their celebration interviews and learning about the similarities and differences between celebrations around the world.

In writing, we are looking at narrative texts and practising the writer’s process. We will then move into exploring ‘The Writer’s Workshop’ model, where students get to choose the writing they want to be working on.

In maths, we will practise applying different strategies to solve multiplication and division problems. Our main focus will be on using doubles and halves. Students will also look at measurement, exploring different tools to measure length and area.
