Music

This term in Performing Arts all classes have been developing aural listening skills and working with understanding the elements of music when playing untuned and tuned instruments. In particular, they have been investigating Tempo, Pitch, Dynamics, Melody and Rhythm. They also play brief musical pieces they have created in front of their peers and at times for the whole school assemblies. Our unit of inquiry has been ‘How We Express Ourselves’ which ties in beautifully to composition and performance.

The Senior students have been bucket drumming as well as completing a dance unit provided by Ausdance. The Middle students have learnt to read basic notation and play the glockenspiels. The Junior students have loved working with African chants and playing the triangles and boomwhackers. The Foundations students enjoy singing and playing the castanets and bongos. All classes have had music appreciation sessions looking at indigenous music and classical composers.

Choir

The term began with 70 enthusiastic singers! They enjoy using the Solfege singing system (Do, Re, Mi), and preparing items for our assemblies. Choir is open to all students and is held in the library each Friday at lunchtime.

In weeks 7 and 8, the students have the fabulous opportunity to perform in front of other students in our friendly competition. They are encouraged to perform a dance, song, play an instrument or act in a small group or by themselves. It is always a hit with the students big and small.

Highton on the Hill

On Monday December 15th, the whole school is involved in our annual concert and family picnic on the oval. Students will begin rehearsing for this in term 4 and information about the evening will be in the school newsletter, closer to the date.
