Assistant Principal's Report

SUSTAINABILITY

This year we are continuing to promote sustainable practices at our school and appreciate the support of parents in helping with this.

We are once again working with Resourcesmart Schools as part of Sustainability Victoria to help guide us. Over the last few years we have completed the Core, Waste and Biodiversity and Water modules.

We have a five bin system in operation in our school. Each classroom has 5 bins:

Landfill

Our landfill goes into the big skip bin and is collected from each classroom once per week. This is a paid service.

Soft plastics

These are collected once per week and are currently taken to the Monash Recycling Centre (with the collapse of Redcycle the Victorian Government are looking at alternative ways to collect Soft Plastics). There are three ‘mum’s from school -Xiumea (Sophia 4MG), Kristy (Lucas 5AR and Chloe 2EB) and Linda (Yuyan 6SC)  who collect the soft plastics each week and take these down to the recycling centre. If anyone else would like to help us with this job please contact Ms Richards.

Recycling

Twice per week we collect the recycling from the classrooms. This is placed in the yellow wheelie bins and collected by the Monash Council.

Paper

We collect paper once per week and have blue wheelie bins that are collected by a company called Betterwaste each fortnight. This is a paid service.

Compost

Twice a week our Waste Warriors bring the compost bins up to either the green wheelie bins (that the council have supplied and we put out each week) or we place them in our compost tubs of which we have four placed around the school.

This week we have begun our daily Nude Food system.  A huge thank you to our parent community who have embraced this initiative and supported us.  The sustainability team will regularly publish tips to help out with ideas for nude food lunchboxes.  (As well as having a positive impact from a sustainability perspective there are also financial and health benefits too!)

CLASSROOM HELPERS

Wheelers Hill Primary School is strongly committed to building important relationships between school and home. An integral part of many of our programs is parental assistance. Classroom teachers value the help of parents to enable them to provide high quality teaching and learning programs. As part of this, WHPS offers a Classroom Helpers session for parents.

This session will give an insight into the types of activities that are part of our programs, the procedures involved in assisting, as well as relevant questions and prompts to support students and encourage them to extend their skills and strategies. This program is not compulsory for those who would like to help out in classrooms but is worthwhile for those who would like basic skills and strategies in effectively helping small groups and individual children as they begin their schooling journey.

If you have already participated in a session in previous years you are not required to participate again.

This program will run on Thursday15th February from 9.00am – 10.00am in the OSHC room. If you are interested in attending please email your name, and your child's name and class to Leasyl.Richards@education.vic.gov.au.

Classroom helpers will begin in Week 5 - please contact your child's teacher if you are interested in helping out. If you have any questions regarding Classroom helpers - please contact me via email or speak to your child's class teacher.
