Wellbeing and

Engagement

Sonya OBrien

Welcome to 2024 everyone.

This year will see the Wellbeing focus at Newlands continue to be developed towards meeting the social and emotional needs of our students and supporting families in practical ways. The main focus for this year will be supporting the growth of student resilience and supporting attendance.

Wellbeing Team

Our wellbeing team this year will consist of our student wellbeing teacher, teacher representatives from each learning cohort, and a representative from the specialist teachers. This team will meet regularly to discuss program development, our school transition from the PSDMS model of funding for students with disabilities to the DIP program (disability inclusion program), classroom and individual student support, delivery of professional learning to staff, sharing of information and resources to families through the newsletter and reviewing and updating our current policies and procedures.

Thao Lam will continue to provide support to individual students through her paediatric psychology services.  Please contact Sonya if you would like to discuss how to access her service.

Cybersafety

On Thursday 1st February we facilitated a parent session related to eSafety which was delivered by Andy Morten from the Preston Police. Andy's role is in the Proactive Policing Unit. He provided those who attended helpful advice on how to navigate their families online presence and how to support children to be safe online.

Andy will be working with the Grade 5/6 team on Wednesday 14th February and support them to ensure that they understand steps they can take to be safe online.

In term 2, he will return to school to meet with students in 3/4.

We are unable to provide a copy of Andy's presentation in our newsletter but below you will find some of the resources which are available to you if you have any questions related to eSafety.

This term Andy will be returning to speak to the 5/6 cohort about eSafety and will return in term 2 to speak to our Grade 3/4 students.

CSEF

Families holding a valid means-tested concession card or temporary foster parents are eligible to apply.

Please contact the office if you are eligible for this funding to ensure that the necessary paperwork has been completed.

The Camps, Sports and Excursions Fund (CSEF) provides payments for eligible students to attend activities like:

  • school camps or trips
  • swimming and school-organised sports programs
  • outdoor education programs
  • excursions and incursions.

The CSEF payment cannot be used towards books, stationery, school uniforms, before/after school care, music lessons, or formals/graduations.

Prep students in government schools who receive funds are also able to get support for school uniforms. Sonya will arrange this uniform package in term 2.
