Melbourne Zoo with Year 7 Science
In November, the whole Year 7 cohort went on an excursion to the Melbourne Zoo for a wonderful day of workshops and exploring. Students enjoyed visiting the different exhibits and hearing from zoo educators who showed them real world examples of adaptations and survival to support their study of biological classification of different organisms in Science.
A huge thank you to Ms Pieropan and the Science team for organising the excursion and to all the teachers and Year 7 team who accompanied the students on the day.
Werribee Zoo with Year 11 Biology
The following week our Year 11 Biology classes had their own experience at Werribee Zoo, where we explored the grasslands and went on a bus safari.
The zoo educators briefed us on adaptations and bioethics in the grasslands, which are usually kept free from public wandering to protect the ecosystem. As biologists for the day doing field work to support the conservation efforts the zoo undertakes, we were allowed to walk into the grasslands to do our data collection. Students were identifying adaptations on the local kangaroo population before going into the protected area to analyse quadrats for biotic and abiotic factors that might affect the food availability for bandicoots.
After that we went on an exciting safari tour that included getting rammed by an oryx (no animals were harmed, we were assured) while we were all distracted by a rhino who took particular interest in our bus!
A great day and the ideal way to wrap up Biology Unit 2, Area of Study 3 before exams.
