Principal's Report

I have enjoyed my term as acting principal.  When I spoke at our staff Christmas lunch last week, I likened it to a journey.  Sure, there have been a few bumps in the road, but these are to be expected when the journey is as exciting, challenging, complex and human as one that takes place in a school.  Especially one that takes place in a great school, with great people.

The year has once again been littered with highlights including the completion of the STEAM Centre, spectacular performing arts events, outstanding VCE results, so much sport, an envious visual arts and design program and preparing delicious meals in food studies.  But these headlines are underpinned by the work that goes on each day in classes.  Students writing persuasive essays in English, dissecting fish in Science, analysing primary sources in History and collecting and representing data in Geography and practicing solving trigonometry problems in Maths.

Last Tuesday we welcomed our  Y7 2024 students for their orientation day and the following evening held our year Y12 graduation evening.  As one group starts their high school journey with nervous excitement and another group farewells Thornbury for the next stage (probably also with nervous excitement!), it is indeed a privilege to witness the growth young people experience over the six years.

I want to acknowledge the significant contributions that both Helen Herouvim and Rick Manning have made to Thornbury High School.  With a combined 80 years of service to public education they have left an indelible mark on the lives of thousands of students.

My sincere thanks goes to Ryan Millar and Tayatea Mackenzie who have been an amazing support to me this year.  Without their cool heads and outstanding leadership it would have been a significantly different experience.  I wish Tayatea all the best as she moves to Maribyrnong College next year.

I hope everybody enjoys a safe and restful break with family and friends.
