TERM 1 SPORTS REPORT

Apologies for not getting this report out last term. As always it was another crazy start to the year for sports at Heidelberg Primary School. We kicked off in week 2 with swim trials for Grades 3-6, with approx. 100 students participating. From those trials 45 students were selected to represent school at the Heidelberg District Swim carnival. It was another successful year in the pool with Heidelberg PS continuing to have the most students qualify for Division either individually or as part of a relay team. 22 students competed at the Banyule Division Swim Championships where schools such as Ivanhoe Grammar, Ivanhoe Buckley House and Alphington Grammar are waiting. It wasn’t as smooth sailing and there was some incredible swimmers HPS students had to face. However, we had success with some individual firsts and relay teams finishing in second place to secure Region places.

The Northern Metropolitan Swim Championships, the last hurdle to face before state was on Thursday 19th March. Up first was our girls medley relay team, made up Keira M, Sophia M, Elle W and Darcy B. The girls were placed in heat 1 finishing in the top 3 and made to wait for heat 2 results. The girls swam incredibly, placing 6th. Ashton L and Henry F were next to compete in the individual 50m freestyle and  then the 50m backstroke in their age groups. Ashton, swimming a freestyle PB lead the whole way but was caught up with about 5m to go, but a big reach to the wall had Ashton finishing 1ST and qualifying for State. In his backstroke race he was up against the boy he just beat by 10ths of a second in freestyle. This time though his opposition got the better of him by a hand. Max M was up next in the individual 50m butterfly. His first year competing in butterfly and making it to Region was already a great achievement. Max ended up finishing 4th overall out of 11 swimmers. Elle W was the last student to swim in an individual race. The 50m Butterfly is her favourite stroke and after swimming a great butterfly leg in the medley relay she was primed to go. The 2 heats consisted of very quick swimmers with Elle finishing in 7th place overall.

The final race was the 12 boys 50m freestyle relay. The boys had been placed in the slower heat due to their division time not being recorded. They should have been swimming in the 2nd heat however they stormed home with a PB but were then made to wait and see if Rosanna Golf Links could beat their time. RGL had beaten them at the previous competitions, so it was tense waiting. The boys did it and made it to the big dance beating RGL by .64 seconds. The boys qualified for State which was held on Thursday 23rd April at MSAC. State swimming results and report to be added next week.

Term 1 2026, the first and hopefully the last I have to postpone our athletics day due to weather. It didn’t help with the preparations for District Athletics however it didn’t phase the students, and we ended up having great carnival. I was worried about our relays as we didn’t have the time and space to practice changeovers this year. One rushed 40 minutes the afternoon before was all the teams had to prepare. However they smashed it and on the day we won 3 out of 6 relays and placed 3rd in another 2 relays (missed out on 2nd in one by a chest on the line). 21 students qualified for Division which is up from last year. Well done to all who represented HPS and Good Luck to those competing at Division in September.
