Primary: Literacy Week

Primary Literacy Week transformed the Islamic College of Melbourne into a celebration of reading, writing, creativity, and imagination, with students enjoying a wide range of activities inspired by this year's theme, A Snowfall of Imagination.

Throughout the week, students participated in engaging winter-themed experiences designed to foster a love of literacy. Snow and ice-inspired storytelling sessions during recess encouraged students to immerse themselves in the magic of stories, while origami bookmark-making activities in the College Library provided a creative outlet for young readers. Our Junior Primary students also enjoyed a variety of winter-themed colouring activities as they embraced the spirit of Literacy Week.

A highlight of the week was a series of creative writing workshops led by acclaimed spoken word poet and storyteller Joel McKerrow. Through poetry and storytelling, students explored the power of language, developed their writing skills, and discovered new ways to express their ideas. The workshops encouraged creative thinking and confidence while aligning with the College's Islamic values and guidelines. We sincerely thank Joel for his valuable contribution to this year's program.

A whole-school Primary Assembly was also held to recognise student participation and achievements throughout Literacy Week. Competition winners were announced, and Year 6 students were presented with their anthology booklets, created in collaboration with author Sarah Speedie. Featuring original student writing and illustrations, the anthologies provide a lasting keepsake of students' creativity and serve as a special memento of both their final year of Primary School and Literacy Week.

From storytelling and creative writing to student achievements and literary celebrations, Primary Literacy Week provided meaningful opportunities for students to explore the power of stories, express their creativity, and share in the joy of reading.
