Level 5 & 6

Welcome Back

We hope all families had a relaxing and enjoyable holiday break. It has been wonderful to welcome the students back for the start of Term Two. We are looking forward to a fantastic term filled with rich learning experiences, new challenges and opportunities for growth.

Curriculum

Literacy

This week, students will revisit and strengthen their understanding of sentence structure. They will focus on what makes a complete and effective sentence, including the use of capital letters, full stops, and ensuring each sentence clearly communicates a meaningful idea. Students will explore how sentences are constructed, identifying the subject and action, and ensuring their writing makes sense to the reader.

Building on this, students will be encouraged to expand beyond simple sentences by adding detail, using more precise vocabulary, and experimenting with different sentence types to make their writing more engaging and purposeful. There will be a strong focus on re-reading and editing their work to check for clarity, flow and impact.

Students will also explore a range of mentor texts, including We Are Australians, My Story, Our Country and the AFL’s Welcome to Country. Through reading, discussion and note-taking, they will analyse these texts, identifying similarities and differences in how ideas are expressed.

As part of this learning, students will begin developing their own Acknowledgement of Country, applying their understanding of sentence structure to create thoughtful and meaningful pieces of writing that reflect their learning about connection to Country.

What you can do at home:

  • Challenge your child to write a short paragraph each day (4–6 sentences) and edit it together—look beyond capital letters and full stops to improve vocabulary, clarity and sentence variety.
  • Encourage your child to read their writing aloud and reflect: Does it sound right? Does it make sense? Could it be more powerful? Read together and discuss the message or meaning of the text.
  • Talk about what “Country” means and why it is important to First Nations peoples.
  • Ask your child to share ideas they may include in their Acknowledgement of Country.

Numeracy

In Numeracy, students will begin a unit on fractions. They will explore the concept of fractions as parts of a whole, develop their understanding of equivalent fractions and begin applying this knowledge to a range of problem-solving tasks.

What you can do at home:

  • Use everyday situations (e.g. cooking, sharing food) to discuss fractions such as halves, thirds and quarters.
  • Ask your child to explain how they know two fractions are equal (e.g. 1/2 = 2/4).
  • Practise identifying fractions in real-life contexts, such as time (quarter past, half past).

CBL (Challenge Based Learning)

Our Big Idea for this term is Country.

Essential Question:

How does understanding Country help us respect the past, make sense of the present and shape a better future?

Challenge:

Inspire others to value and care for Country and its people.

Students will explore this concept through the following guiding questions:

  • What does it mean to have a connection to Country?
  • How did colonisation impact Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities and cultures?
  • What does it mean to be “all in” for a future that respects Country, culture and community?

What you can do at home:

  • Have conversations about the importance of caring for the environment and local community.
  • Explore local Aboriginal history or landmarks together.
  • Encourage your child to share what they are learning and discuss different perspectives respectfully.

Wellbeing

Respectful Relationships

Students will focus on recognising and celebrating their personal and cultural strengths, developing a deeper understanding of themselves and others within our school community.

SWPBS (School-Wide Positive Behaviour Support)

Our SWPBS focus will continue to support students in demonstrating positive behaviours across all school settings. We will revisit expectations and acknowledge students who consistently model our school values.
