INFORMATION & REMINDERS

Term 2 Progress Interviews this Wednesday

Bookings are still open if you have not yet scheduled a Term 2 Progress Interview, and will close at 9pm tomorrow night. This is a great opportunity to ask questions and hear how your child is settling into school.

These interviews are ONLINE only. Webex links for each Prep teacher will be sent out to you.

Their Care

We have been advised that the team at TheirCare will continue to collect Prep students from the classroom for after school care during the first two weeks of this term. From Week 3 (next week), students will need to make their own way to the program. If your child attends, please let them know about this change so they feel prepared and confident.

CURRICULUM

*Please remind your child to go to the toilet before they enter the classroom.

Phonics and reading

We are learning about G ( 'hard' g, as in 'ghost') and B.

Our learning focus will include:

  • Understanding the phonemes (the sound each letter makes)
  • Learning the cued articulation for these sounds
  • Identifying where we might see each letter in a word
  • Practising the graphemes (the way we write the letter), including correct letter formation
  • Reading and writing 3 letter words using the sounds we know

What can you do at home?

• Support your child to read the decodable book in their Reading Pocket. Try and aim to read every day, if you can.

• The 'Roll and Read' page is a great way to practise sounding out and blending words, especially for students who find reading sentences a little challenging.

•Ask your child to tell you the sounds that G and B make, and to show you the cued articulation for the sound. You can also review the letters and sounds we have learned so far using the cards below. When practising, say them like this: “A spells /a/.”

•Learn the Heart Words (in red booklet)

• Work through the optional UFLI pages.

Literature: reading responses and writing

Our mentor text is Country by Aunty Joy Murphy and Sue Lawson. Students will use this text to further explore the concept of Country, including learning about the Country we are on, identifying what is and isn’t considered Country, and exploring the different animals that live on Country.

In Writing, students will practise forming the letters G and B, with a focus on correct entry and exit points. They will also review the formation of previously taught letters.

They will continue to sound out and write CVC words using the sounds they know, and write short, dictated sentences. Students will continue to use their lined writing books and be encouraged to have a go at independently writing their own sentences using a picture prompt.

What can you do at home?

•Practice letter formation of G and B, and other previously taught letters (see list below).

•Provide activities that build hand strength and coordination, such as playing with playdough, threading beads or using tweezers to pick up small objects.

•Write some 3 letter words using the taught sounds (see the picture cards above!)

Maths

We are continuing to explore the concept of part–whole relationships. Students will be partitioning numbers to 10 into three parts and developing their understanding of how numbers can be broken apart and put back together. They will practise subitising parts within numbers to 5 and 10, as well as describing the parts of numbers to 5 using a five-frame and numbers to 10 using a ten-frame.

What can you do at home?

• Practise breaking apart small numbers using everyday items (eg. “We have 5 grapes -how can we split them into two groups?”) and talk about the parts and the whole.

• Play simple games using fingers, toys or snacks to show different ways to make a number (eg. 4 can be 2 and 2, or 3 and 1).

CBL

Our Big Idea is Country. Students will explore this concept through a range of Guiding Questions, including:

What is Country?

Who and what lives on Country?

What happens to Country during the Wurundjeri seasons?

Students will also consider the Essential Question

Why is it important to care for Country?

To bring their learning to life, students will take part in a hands-on Challenge to

Rejuvenate the Prep Welcome Garden

applying their understanding of how to care for and respect Country.

Wellbeing

SWPBS

Our focus is to Be Kind in learning spaces by cooperating with others and sharing equipment.

Respectful Relationships

Students will take part in the lesson All Families Are Different, which helps them explore and celebrate the diversity of families.

Cyber Safety

Students will understand what personal information is, and what is safe and unsafe to share online.
