Supporting Children with Anxiety

From time to time, all children experience worries or fears. However, for some young people, these feelings can become more intense and may begin to impact their everyday life, including school, friendships and wellbeing.

Anxiety is quite common, with many young people experiencing it at different stages of development. There is no single cause of anxiety. Instead, it can develop from a combination of factors such as personality, family history, coping skills, and life experiences, including stressful events or challenges.

The reassuring news is that anxiety can be supported and managed. With the right strategies and guidance, children can learn ways to understand and cope with their feelings so they can continue to thrive both at school and at home.

Supporting Anxiety at Home

Families may wish to explore The Brave Program, a free online program designed to support children and teenagers experiencing anxiety. Developed by Australian universities, the program teaches practical skills such as relaxation, positive thinking, and problem-solving to help young people manage worries and build confidence in challenging situations.

The program is based on well-established approaches, is self paced and is available for young people (3-7 years) children (8–12 years), teenagers (12–17 years) making it a flexible option to use at home.
