Grade 3 and 4

Learning and Thriving in Grade 3 and 4
English
SAVE OUR ENDANGERED ANIMALS, PROTECT OUR ENVIRONMENT AND HELP SAVE OUR WORLD!
Connecting with our Inquiry topic around climate and different biomes around the world has brought to us animals and how they adapt and survive in these different areas. Upon our investigations, we came across endangered animals. Students have researched an endangered animal, and a common issue has been habitat loss. They have been able to understand why their animal is endangered and write a convincing, persuasive piece on how to save or protect their animal. Students have also designed a poster to support their writing by using persuasive devices like alliteration, repetition and personification. Take a look at some of our work!
Maths
In Maths this term, we are becoming Ninja Masters of Multiplication and Division. Students are building their capacity to recall times tables to make them automatic. In our Multiplication and Division unit, students will learn the box and lattice method to solve one- and two-digit multiplication and beyond. From some of these strategies, students will increase their understanding of and the role of place value, build problem-solving skills, solve problems with larger numbers and use the algorithm.
Athletics Day
Last Tuesday, we headed off to Tom Kelly Athletics Track for our Athletics Carnival. With the weather on our side, it was an amazing day! The students had a go and showed wonderful sportsmanship.

Inquiry
This term, the Grade 3/4 students are very excited to be heading to Werribee Zoo. The visit fits in with our Inquiry Unit for Term 3 with a focus on Geography and Science, exploring a range of features across different environments, including climates and animals. We are learning about Australia and each of its states and territories, and how they differ and are similar in temperature, climate and environmental changes. It then leads to comparisons between Australia and each continent, and the impact and adjustments animals make to be able to survive in these various climates. The excursion to the Werribee Zoo has a direct focus on the location of major countries of Africa and South America, with Australia and their major characteristics, including the types of vegetation and native animals found in these areas. Students will have the opportunity to learn about the adaptations of selected African wildlife and about the protection of these places and animals.
The Resilience Project
The Grade 4's have been learning about empathy where they explored their own and others feelings. This involved blowing bubbles and thinking about how they felt when they didn't work and when they did and then they had to think about how someone else would feel if they were unsuccessful in blowing bubbles. Student learnt the acronym ‘ACT’: ‘acknowledge’ the challenge, be a ‘companion’ and listen to the other person ‘talk’ as a strategy to help support and show empathy to others who are experiencing challenges.
We then looked at mindfulness this week. Mindfulness with our eating. We chatted about eating our food mindfully. This involves eating our food slowly, thinking about the texture of the food in our mouth, where does the food come from. Students were then able to think about creating some food that they would enjoy eating that will be good for their mind and body.
