Grade 2 have been learning about our 6th comprehension strategy for reading - The Main Idea. When working out the main idea of a paragraph or a text we can use the following hints to help us:
These clues help increase our understanding by being able to identify the main idea of a piece of writing.
We have also been writing about our personal opinions in persuasive writing pieces. Students have worked hard to follow the OREO model (opinion, reason, example, opinion) and we have a display of some very convincing writing pieces on our classroom window.. I wonder whether you will be convinced!
Our Grade 1 students have been further developing their questioning skills during reading groups and whole class shared reading sessions. They are learning to distinguish between open and closed questions to help deepen their understanding of texts.
Questioning is a key comprehension strategy that encourages students to think critically about what they read. By asking questions before, during, and after reading, students become more engaged with the text and begin to explore ideas beyond the surface level.
We are proud of the progress they are making and encourage you to continue supporting this learning at home by discussing stories and asking questions together.
Grade 1 and 2 have continued learning about multiplication and division. We have practised division strategies using repeated subtraction, equal groups and partitioning. We have also learned about fact families. Student have enjoyed lots of division games and hands on activities to practise their skills.
In celebration of children’s books, Andersons Creek Primary school will be kicking off BOOK WEEK on Friday, August 22nd, 2025 (Week 5). Students from Grade Prep to Year 6 will be encouraged to dress up as their favourite story book character and we’ll kick off the day with a Book Parade from 9:15–10:00 am followed by lots of fun activities around Literacy. We warmly invite families to join us at the parade to experience the incredible costumes and delightful festivities! We hope to see the many characters that we have grown to love and cherish, step out of their books and into our classrooms. Happy reading, and we can’t wait to see all the amazing costumes!
Grade 1 students discussed the topic of : Why we put rules in place and their purpose? When we follow the rules, whether that is the rules in a game, in our classroom or at home, that shows that we care about other people.
The class discussion led to a thoughtful set of values or agreements such as:
The students completed tasks that highlighted the connection to empathetic choices and actions. Empathy means making choices that allows others to:Enjoy the game and have fun.
Feel safe, included and encouraged. Making supportive comments. Having a turn at different roles and responding with curiosity instead of anger if someone isn’t following the rules.
We also discussed topics such as: ‘Maybe others don’t understand the rules?’ and Could we all go over the rules again, so we all understand how to play?
Grade 2s took notice of our breathing; slowing down our breathing through meditation and speeding up our breathing when exercising. We talked about how our breathing changes throughout the day and how we can calm ourselves down by doing some simple breathing exercises; taking a big breath in and then saying "I am calm" as we slowly breathe out. Here is a video that we used to help with this, that you might like to try at home.
