Principal Reflections

Dear Parents and Carers,
Thank you, Mrs Barry-Cupples
A huge thank you to Belinda Barry-Cupples for stepping into the role of Acting Assistant Principal for Infants during Amanda Sheridan's leave. Your dedication and hard work ensured everything ran smoothly, and we truly appreciate your leadership and support for our students and staff at the Infants Campus during this time. We welcome Mrs Sheridan back to the Infants' Campus on Monday.
Leadership Growth Opportunities
Armidale Catholic Schools provides an excellent opportunity for Leadership Growth through the Keystones Program. This Leadership Program supports participants to build their knowledge and skills in the areas of:
The language of leadership
Emotional Intelligence
Building Culture through conversations
Leadership challenges
As a learning opportunity, an additional element of this course supports leaders to shadow other leaders either in our system of schools or beyond. This year, Mr Andrew Millman, Mrs Belinda Barry-Cupples and Mrs Sally Clarke are all participating in the Keystones Program. Over the next couple of weeks, they will each spend time shadowing leadersin different schools in our area and in Brisbane. We look forward to hearing what they have learned from this valuable experience.
Learning in Numeracy
In Stage 3, mental strategies need to be continually reinforced. However, it is important to recognise individual differences in students’ mental strategies. Multiplying two-digit numbers or larger, relies on the distributive property of multiplication. For example, 8 × 24 is 8 times (20 + 4), which in turn is 8 × 20 plus 8 × 4. Students may find recording (using jottings) informal mental strategies to be more efficient than using formal written algorithms, particularly in the case of multiplication. The area model for multiplication can be recorded in an extended form of the traditional algorithm. See example from Mathematics Curriculum doc below:
Today I had the pleasure of sharing in the success of this work in Year 5. It was great for students to acknowledge their understanding and feel comfortable applying it to everyday situations.
Until next week,
Keep smiling,
Alison Hatton
