LITERACY
Reading & Writing
This term, our students will continue to develop their love of reading by engaging with books every day at school—and we encourage you to do the same at home. Daily reading of decodable books and practising paired fluency will help build your child’s confidence as a reader.
As the books your child brings home become longer, they may not finish a whole book each night. That’s okay! They might read a chapter or part of the book instead—this will vary depending on the book and your child’s reading level. If you're unsure, feel free to chat with their teacher.
It’s also very helpful if you talk with your child about what they’re reading. Ask about the characters, what’s happening in the story, or what new facts they’ve learned. Encourage your child to share their opinion about the book—what they liked, didn’t like, or what made it interesting.
We continue to use an evidence-based approach to our Literacy learning. Our Literacy Block will continue to consist of reinforcing the core literacy skills which include, fluency, phonological awareness, heart words (irregular spelling patterns), handwriting and the Sounds Write Phonics Program.
In Writing, we will explore a variety of genres. Students will be thinking about exciting characters, imaginative settings, and coming up with interesting problems and creative solutions. Practising high-frequency (heart) words at home will also support your child’s writing skills.
Students will keep sharing their writing and ideas with classmates to receive feedback and improve their work. Students will be revising and editing their written pieces to lift the quality of their writing.
Handwriting will continue to be a focus too. Students will practise pencil grip, correct letter formation, and positioning their writing on the line—both on whiteboards and in handwriting books.
