Year 11 & 12 Students Plan for the Future at Tertiary Information Session
By Nadia Collis, VCE Coordinator
Today, Charlton College Year 11 and 12 VCE and VCE VM students took an important step toward life after school by attending the annual Tertiary Information Session at Charlton Park. This event, run by the Tertiary Information Service (TIS), brought together representatives from a range of universities, TAFEs, and training providers to support students in exploring their post-school options.
With engaging presentations from tertiary experts from La Trobe University, students were introduced to a wealth of practical advice. Topics included how to navigate the VTAC application system, how to rank your choices similar to a wish list, understanding course prerequisites, scholarship opportunities, and alternative entry options such as SEAS and early entry programs.
Importantly, the session emphasised that there are many different pathways into further study and careers—not just one. Students explored options including university degrees, TAFE qualifications, apprenticeships, traineeships, and bridging or foundation courses. The message was clear: no matter your starting point, there is a path forward to achieving your goals.
The session also covered vital real-life planning topics that are often overlooked. Students received information on: Scholarship opportunities—including those based on academic performance, financial need, and regional location. Accommodation options—such as on-campus colleges, shared housing, and support services for those moving away from home. And the importance of starting to think about budgeting and financial planning to manage the costs of living and study. Including looking at any support entitlements from Services Australia—including Youth Allowance, Rent Assistance, and Relocation Scholarships for eligible students.
Students were encouraged to explore early entry programs and learn about the SEAS (Special Entry Access Scheme), which offers consideration for students that fall into the following categories personal information and location such as small schools in a regional, drought affected area, financial hardship, living with a disability or medical condition, difficult family and life circumstances.
For Year 11 students, the session was a valuable introduction to the possibilities ahead, helping them reflect on subject choices and long-term goals. For Year 12s, it was a timely reminder to stay informed and proactive as VTAC applications and graduation deadlines approach.
We thank the TIS team for visiting our region and equipping our senior students with the tools, confidence, and information they need to plan for life beyond school.
