Science

Welcome to Term 3. We are studying Chemistry this term, which involves observing what objects are made from (materials) and how they behave (their properties).
Level 5/6
Level 5/6 students are solving a messy mystery this term, and using science to find the culprit. Students have been presented with suspects and each week they inspect their stories using science to determine if the suspect is lying or telling the truth. By the end of the term, students will have used their experiments to attempt to determine who made the mess and how.
Level 3/4
Students began this term by demonstrating their understanding of materials and their different properties. Students did a mystery bag activity and attempted to guess the material each item was made from, just by feeling it. This term students will explore materials and their properties in greater detail and why material choices are important.
Level 2
Students have begun exploring Chemistry this term. Students will consider what they already know about materials and their properties before jumping into a variety of hands-on experiences. This included a mystery bag activity similar to the 3/4 students and making records of one specific item's materials and properties in their science journals.
Level 1
Students are working on a unit which explores Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people as Australia's first scientists. Students learn how everyday materials can be physically changed or combined with other materials in a variety of ways. These materials can be used to make tools, shelters, art, games and to find food. This week students worked together to create an Acknowledgment of Country art piece which now hangs on the science room window.
Prep
Prep students started their chemistry unit off by reviewing the Three Little Pigs story and exploring the materials the pigs used to make their houses. Students then looked at houses from all around the world and identified the types of materials used in each. Students finished the lesson by creating a team drawing of a house, using materials they thought would protect the pigs from the Big Bad Wolf.
Garden Club
If you look closely in the veggie patch, our potatoes have begun to sprout! We will watch them grow up and out of their box over the coming months and hopefully be able to harvest some by the end of spring. Planting potatoes in large tubs are a great way to recycle potatoes which have been in the pantry too long and begun to sprout. Just pop them into a foot of dirt and in time, it will grow and produce fresh perfectly edible potatoes for future use. Each time you dig for potatoes to use (in the pot) you will get a surprise. The best part is if you forget to harvest them, the new baby potatoes will sprout and produce more potatoes for another time!
Until next time, remember to act like a proton and stay positive!
