đ Literacy
This fortnight our Preps are continuing their Knowledge Rich unit on farms. This week, weâll be exploring the seasons on a farm and learning how the food we eat makes its journey from farm to market.
Â
In Word Work, weâll keep practising how to decode and spell words using our explicitly taught codes. Students will work with sentences like: âThe lamp is on the desk.â âI chomp on my lunch at the bench.â Itâs wonderful to see how confident theyâre becoming!
Â
In Sentence-Level Writing, weâll be learning how to make our sentences even more interesting by using conjunctions like because and but.
This fortnight, we began our Fluency Partners program, where we work with a partner, track our reading, and read aloud to each other. We work as a team, taking turns listening and offering support.
Weâre also spending time working independently and in small groups with our teachers to focus on our personal reading goals. Please continue to read with your child each day. Just a few minutes makes such a big difference to their confidence and learning.
Â
Preview -We will continue to read and apply taught sounds and digraphs in our Word Work. Preps will practise using conjunctions in sentences and learn about the seasons by engaging with the text All Through the Year.
â Maths
In the past two weeks, we've wrapped up our unit on Addition and Subtraction and started exploring Measurement. Students have been learning terms like height, length, tall, short, and long, and have been comparing objects and classmates using these concepts. They practised using comparative language such as longer, shorter, and taller to describe and order objects.Â
Students engaged in a fun classroom activity of finding a person in the classroom taller and shorter than them. Students drew pictures of themselves and the taller or shorter person.Â
Preview- Next, we'll introduce the concept of Capacity, how much a container can hold, and explore Mass by comparing the weight of objects through hefting (judging weight by feel) and using scales for accurate measurements. These activities will help students develop a deeper understanding of measurement concepts.
Wellbeing
This fortnight, students have been learning about how to recognise and manage their emotions in positive and healthy ways. Through class discussions and activities, they explored different feelings and what might cause them. Students were introduced to simple breathing exercises and mindfulness techniques to help them feel calm and in control when they feel overwhelmed. These strategies empower students to pause, reflect, and respond thoughtfully, building their emotional awareness and resilience in everyday situations.
Â
Preview-
Next, students will be creating their very own friend-o-meter to gather all that they have learnt so far into a display.

Green Team Newsletter #2
The enthusiastic Green Team members from Years 3 to 6 continue to meet with Mrs Alexander and Mrs Stokol each Wednesday lunchtime. Meetings begin with a check-in on how the yard cleaning roster is going. Students report which areas are the cleanest, which need more attention, and share ideas for improvement.
Sustainability remains a key focus. Whether itâs managing waste, maintaining garden spaces, or spreading awareness, students have shown impressive initiative and creativity.
Our 10c container collection is going strong! We've raised over $30 in just a few weeks. Green Team members manage the collection bin outside the canteen on lunch order days, and also visit classrooms weekly to gather containers from specially labelled tubs. By collecting these items daily, we are preventing waste from going to landfill and turning it into cash to support our environmental efforts.
Be sure to check out the Sustainability Display in the gym over the coming weeks to see what weâve been up to!
Did you know? You can support the Green Team by nominating Lysterfield Primary School (LPS) as your donation partner through Victoriaâs Container Deposit Scheme.

Itâs planting season, and whatâs better than free plants?Â
Â
Help the Green Team â and Earn Free Plants!
Did you know that the Knox Environment Society (KES) offers free native plants as prizes through their Nature Discovery Passport program?
By playing an interactive game and collecting stamps at local reserves, participants can earn plant prizes, and what better way to use those plants than by donating them to our school for the Green Team to grow and maintain?
Explore one of the many beautiful reserves in Knox on the weekend, learn about your local ecology, collect stamps, and claim your prize. Itâs a fun way to get outside, support the environment, and contribute to our schoolâs sustainability efforts.
And who says the fun is just for the kids? Families are welcome to join in too!
