What's been happening in our Faculties?

It has been a busy and rewarding term for the English Faculty at Thomas Reddall. Our students have been engaging with a wide range of learning experiences across all years, demonstrating both creativity and resilience as they continue to develop their voice through the study of English.

Year 7 have been exploring the world of poetry, experimenting with language, imagery and rhythm to express their ideas in powerful and original ways. This first foray into the more creative side of English has allowed students to appreciate how words can paint pictures, stir emotions, and communicate thoughts that are sometimes hard to say aloud. Their enthusiasm and imagination have been inspiring.

Year 8 have embraced performance, writing original monologues after their study of drama and bravely performing them for their teachers. This work has encouraged students to step into the shoes of characters and explore perspectives beyond their own, deepening their understanding of empathy and storytelling. The courage they have shown in performing their words aloud is a testament to the growing confidence and creativity within this year group.

Our Year 9 and 10 students have been focusing on their examinations, gaining valuable experience in writing under timed conditions. These assessments are not only a chance to test knowledge, but also an important way of building the discipline, focus and stamina required for senior English. We are eager to see this skill become second nature, as it is the key to success in Years 11 and 12 and beyond. Their determination to improve and master the craft of writing under pressure has been impressive.

Year 11 have just completed their Yearly Examinations, and we are so proud of the maturity and dedication they have displayed. This important milestone is a chance for them to reflect on how far they have come and prepare for the exciting challenges of the HSC year. We continue to encourage all students to build good habits of working at home and revising regularly, so that when they walk into the classroom, they are ready to show us their very best.

Finally, Year 12 are approaching the end of their journey with us, and their absence will be deeply felt. Over the years, we have seen them grow not just as students, but as thoughtful young adults, capable of analysing the world around them with insight and creativity. It has been a privilege for Mr Humphry, Ms Meyer, Ms Marzano and Ms Cagulada to walk alongside them on this journey, to share in their struggles and their triumphs, and to watch them become the people they are today. Their legacy will remain in the classrooms, the stories, and the laughter they leave behind, and the English Faculty will miss them greatly. We wish them every success in their futures and know they will carry with them the skills, confidence, and love of language that will serve them for life.

We congratulate all of our students on their achievements this term and look forward to seeing their continued growth in Term Four!

Term 3 has been an exciting and engaging one for the Mathematics Faculty! Our students had the opportunity to stretch their thinking and put their problem-solving skills to the test in a variety of competitions.

Our Year 7 and 8 students took part in a Maths Olympiad, where they tackled challenging, outside-the-box questions designed to encourage creativity and perseverance. It was wonderful to see them collaborate, think deeply, and apply their knowledge in new and inventive ways.

In addition, students from Years 7 through 12 participated in the Australian Mathematics Competition—a prestigious event that brings together problem-solvers from across the country. This gave our students a chance to showcase their mathematical abilities, and we are very proud of their efforts and enthusiasm.

We have also seen a fantastic increase in attendance at Maths Club this term. More and more students are coming along, not only to get extra support with classwork, but also to share strategies, work through tricky problems, and build their confidence in mathematics.

Overall, it has been a fun and rewarding term, full of opportunities to celebrate mathematics beyond the classroom. We look forward to seeing our students continue to grow in confidence and skill as they take on new challenges in Term 4!

This August, the Science Faculty at TRHS proudly joined schools across Australia in celebrating National Science Week under the captivating theme “Decoding the Universe – Exploring the Unknown with Nature’s Hidden Language.” Throughout the week, students enthusiastically participated in code-breaking puzzle challenges, colouring competitions, and a particle guessing game—creative hands-on experiences that brought mathematical and quantum concepts to life.

A major highlight was the AVISTA Science Show, presented by AROSE, which offered an immersive glimpse into the relationship between science and the defence industry. Through dynamic, curriculum-aligned demonstrations—featuring air foils in flight, rocket power, air cannons, and a futuristic robot dog—students were inspired by the cutting edges of aviation, robotics, AI, and autonomous technologies.

We would like to acknowledge the students who participated in the colouring competition and the particle guessing game. Congratulations to the winners:

-Hasna A in Year 9 for the particle guessing game

- Keira F in Year 12 for the colouring competition.

Perhaps we will see some of our future TRED scientists exploring these exciting fields in the years ahead!

Lastly it was great to see our PASS students displaying skills learnt throughout the year as they officiated at local PSSA Gala days, taking on roles as coaches and referees. These students should be extremely proud of their efforts and were recognised by the organiser, Primary teachers and parents.

Throughout terms 2 and 3, Stage 5 Child Studies students have enjoyed fortnightly visits to Ambarvale Public School’s Little Stars Playgroup, a free community program for children aged 0–5 years. These visits have allowed students to apply classroom learning in real-life settings, deepening their understanding of child growth, development, and different types of play.

Students have thrived in this environment, building confidence, skills, and meaningful connections, and they should be extremely proud of the positive impact they have made. They have experienced first-hand the importance of positive relationships in early childhood while contributing to the wider community. This valuable partnership has been an enriching and rewarding experience for the students.

Our talented Year 12 Hospitality students have wrapped up their final catering event in style, delivering a mouth-watering menu for the school’s NAIDOC Assembly. Term 3 has been extremely busy in the Wellbeing and Learning Support Faculties with our school community coming together to recognise and celebrate several important initiatives that highlight kindness, respect, inclusion, and connection.

Anti-Bullying Week

During Anti-Bullying Week, our students engaged in activities, colour run, assemblies and discussions that encouraged them to reflect on the impact of bullying and the importance of being respectful and supportive of one another. It was inspiring to see students share ideas about how they can stand up for others and help create a safe, positive school culture. In particular, our whole school participated in an assembly to raise awareness of bullying by participating in the Worlds Largest Anti Bullying lesson run by Kids Helpline and a visit from Matt and Kelly from Charlotte's Wish sharing their personal loss of the effects of bullying.

Wear It Purple Day

Our school turned purple in support of Wear It Purple Day! Staff and students proudly wore purple to show solidarity with LGBTQIA+ young people and to promote diversity and inclusion. The strong turnout across our community with a disco in the Performance Space sent a powerful message that everyone deserves to feel safe, valued, and celebrated for who they are. A huge thank you to Mr Norman for his wonderful organisation.

R U OK? Day

R U OK? Day gave us all the opportunity to pause, reflect, and connect with each other. Students learned about how to ask the important question, “Are you OK?”, and how to listen and support their peers. Ms Enthaler arranged a lovely student and staff breakfast where the conversations sparked throughout the day highlighted the value of checking in and showing care for those around us.

These events were a great reminder of the role we all play in building a school where every student belongs and feels supported. Thank you to our staff, students, and families for making each of these days so meaningful.
