Therapy Animals in Schools

Therapy animals provide comfort, companionship and emotional support to students who may experience behavioural, emotional, developmental and mental health conditions, physical disabilities or isolation. Therapy animals can assist students to engage in school and encourage regular and sustained attendance. They can also assist with sensory regulation and reduce anxiety through calm companionship.

A recent report highlighted students working with therapy dogs experienced increased motivation for learning, resulting in improved outcomes.  Research has shown a range of benefits including increased school attendance, gains in confidence, self-esteem and enhanced relationships with peers and teachers.

At Borinya we are lucky enough to have our own Australian-accredited Therapy Dog, Willow the Saint Bernard. Learner Diversity leader Sam and Willow completed their Therapy Dog and Handler training with K9 Therapy and Service Dogs in Benalla.

Willow has been temperament tested and exposed to various experiences and people. Willow is under the care of Wangaratta Veterinary Clinic and is fully vaccinated and up to date with all her medical requirements. She is microchipped and registered with both the National Central Animal Records of Australia and Wangaratta Rural City Council.
