CAIRNS CAMP Year 9
We are thrilled to share the success of our recent Year 9 Camp to Cairns, an unforgettable adventure that took place from Monday 26 August to Saturday 31 August. A total of 50 students and seven dedicated staff members attended the camp, making it a truly enriching experience for everyone involved. I would like to express my deepest thanks to all the staff who joined me and made this trip possible including Mr Adam Martin, Mr Darin Joyce, Ms Emily Sykes, Mr Liam McDonald, Jai Block and Lorelei Tildesley.
The camp kicked off with an early 2.30am start at Frankston High School, followed by a smooth Jetstar flight that landed us in sunny Cairns by 9.20am on Monday. The excitement truly began with a visit to the stunning Cairns Aquarium, where students explored the rich marine life of the region. That evening, we settled into our accommodation, enjoyed dinner together, and prepared for the exciting days ahead.
Tuesday 27 August was all about nature as we transferred to the Daintree Discovery Centre for a self-guided tour of the world’s oldest rainforest. Students had the opportunity to explore the rich biodiversity and immerse themselves in the natural beauty of this World Heritage site.
Wednesday 28 August was a highlight for many as we embarked on a full-day adventure to Fitzroy Island. From visiting the Turtle Rehabilitation Centre to a thrilling Glass Bottom Boat tour, and the Indigenous Connections program, the day was packed with educational and cultural experiences. Students enjoyed snorkeling on the island and a visit to Nudie Beach.
Thursday 29 August was another exciting day as we ventured to the Great Barrier Reef with Sunlovers Reef Cruises. Students explored the pontoon, participated in a variety of activities such as snorkeling, a semi-submersible tour, and even got to experience the underwater observatory. The enclosed ocean pool, filled with breathtaking corals and a variety of vividly colored fish, combined with the exciting waterslide, were unforgettable highlights of the experience! That evening, we explored the vibrant Cairns Night Market and night lights, where students enjoyed free time for dinner and shopping.
Friday 30 August was a day full of culture and wildlife. We started with a scenic ride on the Kuranda Scenic Railway, followed by a visit to the Rainforestation Nature Wildlife Park. Students experienced the fascinating Pamagirri dance show, went on an Army Duck rainforest tour, and even participated in a Dreamtime walk, learning about the rich history of the Aboriginal people. In the evening, we took a sunset walk and treated ourselves to ice cream as we reflected on our week.
Our final day, Saturday 31 August was bittersweet as we cleaned up, checked out, and headed back to Cairns Airport for our flight home. The journey back was smooth, and we returned to Frankston High School tired but full of incredible memories.
This camp was a fantastic opportunity for students to grow, learn, and challenge themselves in an environment far beyond the classroom.
During the camp, many students came to realise that their phones were not as important as they once thought. Without devices, they were able to build deeper, more meaningful connections with their peers, all while fully embracing the natural beauty of Cairns. It was a refreshing reminder to live in the moment, taking in the experience without the distractions of technology.
We are so proud of their conduct and engagement throughout the trip, and we look forward to many more adventures to come. Once again, a huge thank you to the staff and students for making this camp such a resounding success!
Current Year 8 students will get the opportunity to express interest in attending this camp in Year 9 2025 during early commencement (25 November-9 December 2024).
