Our Amazing Bodies

Here on the Amazing Bodies page, our School Nurse Kiera Heasly shares an amazing fact about the human body.

Did you know?

Your brain is the computer system of your body. It's super powerful and uses a lot of energy. The oxygen we breathe, and the glucose (sugar) stored in our cells from the foods that we eat are optimal fuel sources to help keep our brains firing all day long.

What do our brains do?

The brain is an intricate and vital organ responsible for controlling nearly every function in the human body. It does this together with the help of the spinal cord. Together the brain and spinal cord forms the central nervous system (CNS).

The CNS acts as the command centre for the body, coordinating voluntary actions like movement and involuntary actions like heart rate and breathing. This system allows for communication between the brain and the rest of the body, ensuring that all processes are regulated effectively and efficiently.

  • It manages cognitive processes such as thought, memory, and emotion, helping you think, remember important information and feel emotions.
  • Processes sensory input such as touch and vision, ensuring we can interact with the world around us.
  • Regulates essential bodily functions such as breathing, temperature and hunger, helping us know when we are cold or hungry.
