NAPLAN

What is NAPLAN?
NAPLAN is a national assessment that helps teachers, parents, and carers see how students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9 progress in Literacy and Numeracy over time.
NAPLAN tests what students have been learning daily in the classroom in their current and previous years of schooling and is linked to the Australian Curriculum: English and Mathematics.
As in previous years, Whittlesea Primary School will conduct all the tests online, except for Year 3 Writing, which will remain with pencil and paper.
Completing the NAPLAN assessment online means students answer questions that adapt to their performance during the test. Each student’s results are based on the number and difficulty of the questions they have answered correctly, providing more precise and detailed information on a student’s performance in the tests.

Catch-up sessions will be run for students who are absent from testing sessions.
What do students need on testing days?
On testing days, students must come to school with a fully charged laptop and their laptop charger. They should also bring a drink bottle to remain hydrated during testing.
What can you do to help your child with NAPLAN?
Whilst teachers have been doing their best to prepare your child for NAPLAN this can still be a nervous time for students. Some things for parents/carers to keep in mind heading into testing are:
- Keep a Positive Attitude: Remind your child that NAPLAN is just one part of their education journey. It's important that they do their best, but not worry if everything isn't perfect.
- Practice Mindfulness or Relaxation Techniques: Help your child manage any anxiety or stress by practising relaxation techniques, such as deep breathing exercises or mindfulness, to help them stay calm before and during the test.
- Good Sleep: Make sure your child gets enough sleep, particularly in the days leading up to the test. A well-rested child is more focused and alert.
- Healthy Eating: On test days, provide your child with a nutritious breakfast and ensure they have healthy snacks for energy throughout the day.
- Exercise: Encourage your child to participate in physical activity when they are at home, as exercise can help improve focus and reduce stress.
- Celebrate Effort: Praise your child's effort into preparing, not just the results. This helps to build confidence and a healthy mindset about undertaking tests.
We wish all of our Year 3 and Year 5 students the best of luck with their NAPLAN testing. We are extremely proud of their hard work and can not wait to see how they all go.
