This week, we started the week with our first whole school assembly. Unfortunately, I could not be there because of an unexpected medical procedure, but I am back on track now and happy to return to school. Thank you to Mr Kirkright and our student leaders for running the assembly. It was pleasing that we could celebrate the student voice team and present them with their badges. Mr Pain will again be working with the SVT. A schedule of the SVT meetings will be published very soon in classrooms and also in the newsletter.
Student voice in education refers to a student's active involvement in decision-making that affects their learning experiences, school environment, and educational needs. It’s about valuing and respecting students' perspectives, ideas, and opinions, allowing them to contribute meaningfully to their schooling experience. This concept can appear in different ways, including having students input about curriculum, which gives students a say in what they learn, how they show it, and how their progress is assessed. Feedback mechanisms are also important, encouraging students to provide feedback on teaching, school events/projects, classroom environments, and the overall schooling experience. Ultimately, student voice aims to create a more inclusive and empowering learning environment, fostering student engagement, authentic connections, and motivation.
Last night, I enjoyed spending time with all our Foundation students, families and staff. The picnic is a casual gathering as the Foundations students start to attend full weeks of school. It allows the families to connect and enjoy watching the students play together, as many have formed new friendships. It is also a time when families can share their own experiences on starting school in their own homes. I would like to send out a big THANK YOU to our Education Support staff member, Ms Aimee Gould, who gave up her time to show her expertise with her face painting. We greatly appreciate this (and I hope there were not too many hassles with the face washing before heading to bed!)
The Department of Education has recently updated its Respectful Behaviours within the School Community Policy. This policy reminds us that all school staff have the right to feel safe at work and be respected by everyone in the school community. We are very fortunate that we already have a very respectful community. I always find the interactions with parents and family members very polite and respectful, even when working through a query or concern together. As part of this update, the Department has produced various posters we have been asked to display. These are currently in our front office.
I wish everyone a very relaxing and enjoyable long weekend. If you are travelling, please stay safe on the roads.
We look forward to seeing everyone next Tuesday 11th March.
