Handa's Surprise

Over the next few weeks our reading focus is linked to the popular children's book 'Handa's Surprise'. We have started to learn about life in rural Africa. In Eileen Browne's book "Handa's Surprise," Handa, a young girl from the Luo tribe in Kenya, prepares a basket of seven fruits for her friend Akeyo, but along the way, mischievous animals steal the fruit, leaving only tangerines when she reaches Akeyo's village. Activities will include weaving with our Buddies, collecting data about our favourite fruits, drawing story maps, sequencing the story, writing our own 'Surprise' story, and singing and dancing to African music.

Weaving with our Year 5/6 Buddies

The Very Hungry Caterpillar

Over the past two weeks students completed learning tasks linked to the popular picture story book 'The Very Hungry Caterpillar'. We learnt to sequence the days of the week, talked about time intervals and made connections between the days of the week to familiar events in maths lessons. We sequenced and illustrated the story, followed directed drawing instructions and made a mini book with our Year 5/6 Buddies.
