Grade 5/6

Classroom
Over the past few weeks, our Grade 5 students have been engaged in a wide range of exciting and challenging learning activities across different subjects. In English, we’ve focused on important skills such as identifying fact and opinion, understanding contextual clues, and analysing tone. These skills have been key in helping students become more critical readers and effective communicators. By distinguishing between facts and opinions, using context to understand unfamiliar words, and recognising the tone of a piece of writing, students are building a deeper appreciation for how language shapes meaning and conveys emotion.
In mathematics, students have been sharpening their skills in measurement, with a particular focus on converting between different units of length, mass, and capacity. They’ve also been exploring the properties of 2D and 3D shapes, deepening their understanding of geometry. Additionally, students have tackled multiplication and division worded problems, which have helped them apply their mathematical knowledge to real-world scenarios. This practical application is not only reinforcing their problem-solving skills but also showing them how math plays a role in everyday life.
Our inquiry unit on History has been particularly enriching as we’ve explored the concept of human rights, with a specific focus on the rights of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. Through this unit, students have gained a deeper understanding of the history and ongoing struggles for equality and justice faced by Indigenous Australians. By reflecting on the past and considering how these issues continue to impact society today, students have developed greater empathy and awareness. It has been inspiring to see their engagement with such an important and meaningful topic, which has fostered thoughtful discussions and a commitment to learning about social justice.
NAPLAN
The NAPLAN testing period has officially come to a close, and we couldn’t be prouder of our dedicated Grade 3 and 5 students who worked so hard throughout the process. Over the past few weeks, our students showed incredible focus and perseverance as they navigated through the various assessments in reading, writing, language conventions, and numeracy. Their positive attitudes and determination are truly commendable, and it's clear that each student gave their best effort. It's not just about the test results, but the growth and resilience they demonstrated during this challenging period.
As we reflect on this milestone, we want to take a moment to acknowledge the support from our families, who provided the encouragement and guidance needed for our students to succeed. While NAPLAN is an important tool for measuring progress, it's the journey and the skills our students develop along the way that truly matter. Now that the testing is behind us, it's time to celebrate all the hard work and look forward to the exciting learning opportunities ahead. Congratulations to all of our Grade 3 and 5 students for their outstanding efforts!
