SEL Specialist Learning Update

This fortnight in SEL, all classes explored the concept of the 'Circle of Control'. It is a visual tool that helps children to identify what they can and can't control, when in a situation with strong emotions.

Students brainstormed things that are out of their control and quickly realised that there are many things. However they then came to the realisation that the one thing they can control is themseleves. The example below is one brainstormed with a class.

Students also discussed how these uncontrollable factors can sometimes lead to problems. To further unpack this, students explored a variety of problems that can happen throughout the school day and placed examples on the Problem Scale, ranking them by their size.

From there, students determined how to address each problem by asking if they should:

  • Let it go
  • Solve it ourselves or ask a friend for help
  • Or tell a teacher
