From the Year 4 Classroom

It was lovely to see some of you at our meet and greet breakfast morning last week, thank you for your attendance. It was a beautiful morning to catch up with so many of you. The students were excited to show families their learning spaces and enjoy breakfast with them. We look forward to seeing you all next week at Learning Conversations to discuss how your child has begun the year. 4S’s Learning Conversations will be Monday 17th and Tuesday 18th March and 4Ms and 4HD’s will be held next Tuesday 18th and Wednesday 19th of March. Camp is quickly approaching. A note, with some last-minute details will go home in the last week of this term.

In Literacy, we have finished reading our class novel Kensuke's Kingdom. It was so great to hear the students’ engagement when reading the last chapters of the text. The author did a fantastic job at leaving us in suspense and wanting us to read on. We continued to explore a range of vocabulary and were encouraged to use these words in our own writing. We were impressed by the depth of the students responses surrounding the text, both verbally and written. It was fantastic to hear the voices of all the students in our sessions. We have begun a new text this week called ‘Leo and Ralph’. Although we have just commenced reading it, we are already seeing questioning and curiosity.

In Writing, we have engaged in various opportunities to craft full persuasive texts as well as focus on specific elements of persuasive structure, such as introductions and body paragraphs. Additionally, students refined their writing using the new OCHRE structure, which has proven highly beneficial. Through revision and editing, we have strengthened the connection between our reading and writing skills.

In Math, we have transitioned from Fractions to exploring the concept of Time. One advantage of the OCHRE curriculum is that it allows students to revisit previously taught concepts during the Daily Review, rather than simply moving on. We encourage you to incorporate math into everyday activities at home—whether it's calculating grocery costs or discussing time-related questions. These multiple exposures help deepen students' understanding and enhance their learning experiences.

In Religion, we held our Lent Liturgy in the Mercy Centre. It was beautiful to witness the respect and reverence of students during this time. We have completed the ‘Prayer’ unit by asking students to contribute to our class prayer book which we will use throughout the term during Morning Prayer. They were beautifully written prayers – well done kids. We have moved onto the Lent unit. Students have planted their own seeds to represent their Lentern journey, as well as named something they will either give up or take up during the 40 days of Lent leading up to Easter.

In Inquiry, students had a wonderful session on identifying their own personal and physical strengths. Students were able to share these with their classmates and speak about experiences where they have used their strengths. It was lovely hearing these from the students. This week we are looking at the purpose of the acknowledgment of Country and students to complete an activity based on this learning.

Congratulations again to the Year 4s who participated in the Regional Swimming Wangaratta last fortnight: Billie Archibald, Indi Perks, Maddox Oughton, Billy Manoj-Margison, Olivia Deglaitis and Annabelle Kennedy. We loved hearing your results when you returned to school. We were certainly very proud of your achievements.
