From the Year 1 Classroom

We're already more than halfway through Term 1! It's been wonderful seeing the students confidently walk into the classrooms on their own. We're focusing on building their independence, as it greatly supports their success in learning. Just a quick reminder that students need to bring a hat each day. Please ensure it's clearly labelled with your child's first and last name.

Learning Conversations:

Remember to book in your Learning Conversations via PAM. It’s a great opportunity to share your child's successes and goals. If you are unable to make those times, please contact your child's teacher to arrange another time.

Literacy:

This week the children have really enjoyed learning about compound words (two separate words made into one word). See if your child can give you some examples of a compound word.

Please remember to read at home with your child. This helps build confidence, consolidates their understandings and reading skills. We have been loving learning

about our ‘Tricky Words’. The Tricky Words that we are learning to read and spell at the moment are; here, want, what, where, some, should, would, could, saw, friend, school. You will find these words in the back of your Term 1 Take Home Reader. We are collecting the Blue Reader Satchels on Friday to monitor reading at home. The children are frequently reminded at school to change their take-home readers, but if they forget you can also read for enjoyment at home with your child.

Maths:

We've really enjoyed using MAB blocks to help us grasp the concept of place value, along with lots of cool hands on games. Now, we're moving onto learning about Addition and Subtraction. One important concept to practise is the "friends of 10" — pairs of numbers that add up to 10. For example, 4 + 6 = 10.

Religion:

The children are enjoying our new topic of Lent and Easter, particularly our discussions around Project Compassion and helping out those in need (almsgiving). We have also been looking at acts of kindness we can do during Lent.
