From the Year 6 Classroom

We hope everyone had a restful and enjoyable long weekend! As we continue our journey through Term 1, we'd like to update you on what’s been happening in Year 6 these past couple of weeks.

Class Novel - 'The Silver Donkey' We are excited to have begun our new class novel, The Silver Donkey, by Sonya Hartnett. The story is a rich, captivating tale that explores themes of friendship, courage, and the effects of war. The students are already engaged with the plot and are looking forward to delving deeper into the characters and themes over the coming weeks.

Writing Unit - Narrative & Fables In writing, we have begun a new unit on Narrative Writing, with a focus on the structure and features of a fable. The students are exploring how these stories convey moral lessons through their plots and characters. They will also identify the purpose and structure of a fable and work on crafting their own. We are excited to see the creativity and imagination that will come from this unit!

Mathematics - Operations We have been learning how to solve tricky calculations by following the Order of Operations! This is an essential skill for tackling everything from simple addition to more complex problems.

But what exactly is the Order of Operations? It’s a set of rules that helps us figure out the correct sequence to solve math problems. The order goes like this:

  1. Brackets – First, solve anything inside brackets (or parentheses).
  2. Exponents – Next, deal with any powers or square roots.
  3. Division and Multiplication – From left to right, do any division or multiplication.
  4. Addition and Subtraction – Finally, handle any addition or subtraction, also from left to right.

We like to remember it with the acronym BIDMAS (Brackets, Indices, Division/Multiplication, Addition/Subtraction) to help keep us on track!

Assembly & Meditation Leaders

We would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge the students who have volunteered to lead Monday and Friday assemblies, as well as meditation sessions. These students have shown great responsibility and leadership, and they should be proud of their efforts. Their contributions have helped to make our school community even stronger. Well done!

Art - Picasso-Inspired Creations

In Art, we have been inspired by the work of Picasso to create our own original pieces. The students have enjoyed exploring his unique style and techniques, and have been experimenting with shapes, colors, and abstract designs. Please see photos below.

Parent-Teacher Interviews

We look forward to meeting with many of you during the upcoming parent-teacher interviews. Please note, if you have already had a meeting to discuss your child’s Personal Learning Plan (PLP), there is no need to book another session.

Reading and Times Tables Practice

As always, we encourage you to support your child by encouraging them to read 4-5 times a week. Regular reading helps improve their comprehension, vocabulary, and overall literacy skills. Additionally, please encourage them to practice their times tables regularly, as this is key to building their confidence and fluency in Mathematics.
