Foundation

In the past few weeks, the Foundation students have been learning about what a word is. They have listened to sentences and counted how many words they could hear using a caterpillar image. They can point to each segment of the caterpillar as the teachers say words in a sentence. They have also learnt the sound /m/. They have learnt to recognise /m/ with “Maggie Mouse who likes to mmmmunch on mmmmuffins.” This week they are focussed on the beginning sound /s/. They have been having fun learning “Sssammy Ssseal, sssurfs in the sssea!”.  (Move hand to show seal surfing in the seal)

New - Focus on Reading

This year we are having a focus on improving reading from Foundation to Year 6. It is expected that your child read their take home reading materials every night for 10 to 15 minutes, depending on your child’s age. Year 5/6 students should be reading every night for 15 minutes, while a Foundation student would be expected to read for 5 minutes.

Children are encouraged to borrow books from the library every week when their class goes to Library.

Please encourage your child to have their library bag on their library day and to find time during the week to read the book together. Research suggests that:

Reading to young children is an important way to help them build language skills. It exposes them to new words and ways of using language.
