In Our Classrooms

YEAR 5

This week, the Year 5 students completed their Writing NAPLAN Test. Well done to all students involved – we are incredibly proud of your efforts. Next week, students will continue with further NAPLAN testing, using their iPads in the classroom. Please remember to bring your headphones for these tests and ensure you arrive at school promptly.

In Term 3, Year 5 students will have the opportunity to attend the Year 5 camp at Sovereign Hill. This one-night camp will take place from Monday, August 4th to Tuesday August 5th. Students will have the chance to consolidate their classroom learning about the history of the Gold Rush. More information regarding the camp will be posted on Compass in the coming weeks.

The Year 5 students are also participating in weekly Year Level Sport every Wednesday during session 5. Students are competing in their houses and earning points by demonstrating the school values and scoring in their assigned sports. Students are welcome to wear their Hazel Glen College approved sport t-shirts on these days.

In the classroom, students have been focusing on literacy topics such as Narrative and Persuasive writing. They’ve had the opportunity to explore the different features of narrative and persuasive texts, then implement these features into their own writing.

In Numeracy, students have been working on identifying and constructing 3D shapes from nets, finding factors and multiples of various numbers, and comparing and ordering different fractions.

As we progress through Term 1, Year 5 classroom teachers are posting weekly updates of student learning on Seesaw. Please ensure you are logged in to view your child’s account. If you are unable to log in or access your child's work, please contact your child's classroom teacher for assistance.

YEAR 4 CURIOSITY

Our Year 4 students have been learning about civics and citizenship. Students have been exploring rules and laws, who enforces them in our community and how we are kept safe. They have also been finding out what our councils and governments do that is important to our communities. We had a special guest John Dumaresq the Mayor of Nillumbik who attended our Primary Years Assembly last week to speak to the students about their learning.

STUDENT LEADERSHIP ACADEMY UPDATE

Welcome to the Primary Years Student Leadership Academy for 2025!

So far in  2025, we have been busy finding out our leadership types and identifying our personal qualities that we think make us good leaders. We have brainstormed ideas for possible changes we’d like to see in the Primary Years. We also surveyed students in Years 3 to 6 on how they got to school in preparation for Ride/Scoot and Walk to School Day.

Next Thursday the 27th March, the SLA will be hosting Ride to School Day. We will again survey classes across the Primary Years to see if we can beat our average active travel score. Students who choose active travel on the day will receive a house point, we will be announcing the winners of our colouring competition and there will be a special addition of Cheesy Friday to signify the importance of healthy eating habits. We hope to see as many people choose to actively travel to school next Thursday!

We were all very excited to receive our Student Leadership Academy badges this week at our Year Level Assemblies. This makes us easy to find around the school and is a sense of pride. We look forward to talking to more students and welcome them to seek us out in the yard to talk about their ideas.

PREP TO YEAR 6 CURIOSITY TOPICS

As part of our learning programs, we always encourage families to support your child/ren at home by sharing their stories and learning about our curiosity topics. Here is a list of our Term 1 units. You can support your child at home with developing their understanding by searching for non-fiction texts related to the topic and having discussions. On your weekend experiences, you may find that your child may be able to make links to their learning at school and these are valuable and rich learning opportunities.
