Year Six - Spotlight on Learning

Bethlehem Community

Dear Families,

Week eight saw students attend their Grade 6 camp, which proved to be an amazing experience filled with opportunities to learn new skills and try new activities. It was wonderful to see the students embrace challenges, step out of their comfort zones, and engage with everything the camp had to offer.

This week we learnt about...

English Focus

Reading: This week, our students have been exploring the novel Rivet Boy by Barbara Henderson. Through their reading, they continued to delve into key themes and engaged with contemplative questions, fostering meaningful discussions and reflections on the text. Next week we will continue our novel study on Rivet Boy.

Writing: This week, our students learned about different sentence types, including statements, commands, questions, and exclamations. They explored how to distinguish between these sentence types and how to use the appropriate punctuation when writing them. Students also continued working on their persuasive text on child labour, focusing on the structure of body paragraphs and conclusions, as well as the use of effective language devices for persuasive writing.

Mathematics Focus

This week, students continued collaborating with a partner to complete their floor plan project, designing a house of their choice. They were tasked with designing the rooms within their home and applying their knowledge of area to calculate the cost of covering the floor space. As they worked together, students negotiated the materials they would use, all while staying within a set budget. We will move onto Data Representation in week 9.

Integrated Studies Focus

This week, students learned about the Federation. They analysed life before the Federation and identified the key developments that led to its formation. Our study of Australian History will continue in Week 9.

Social & Emotional Learning Focus

This week, students learned how to recognise and apply the concept of emotional intensity by understanding how emotions can vary in strength. They explored ways to describe and respond to these emotions, focusing on body language, situations that might trigger different levels of emotional intensity, and related vocabulary

Auslan Focus

In Auslan, we began Unit 2C. Students focused on requests that are useful in the classroom.

Kind regards,

The Year 6 Team
