What's been happening in Foundation L

Foundation L have made a wonderful start to the year. Here is a snapshot of all the new and exciting things we have been doing.

Maths

We have focused on sorting, data collection and patterning. We had fun sorting the shoes in our class in different ways. We have found and made many different patterns, enjoying the beautiful summer days to create our nature patterns.

Our first few weeks have been about our sense of belonging here at school. We created these beautiful portraits that are displayed in our classroom.

We also enjoyed reading stories 'The Red Beast', 'No Biggy', 'Have you filled your bucket today', 'Decibella' and 'Hey Warrior'. All of these books helped us recognise our feelings and emotions.

We have also started working with Mrs Harry with our Kimochis program. We have met Cat and Cloud.

We have been working hard to learn our phonics sounds as we learn to read and write. We have enjoyed our new individual whiteboard packs.

In iUnit we are finding out about our families. We made a huge Foundation family tree made up of all of our families.

We are leaning to speak Indonesian with Bu Tretheway. We learned to write 'Nama Saya' and our name, which means My name is...

Oliphant Science Awards 2025

Registrations are now open for the 2025 Oliphant Science Awards!

The final day for registrations is Friday 15th May. There is a lot of interest and many keen scientists ready to get started, so Mr Harris will be sending home the registration forms from Science lessons with those students who have put their names down as being interested. Once you've had a chance to talk with your child about their involvement, please fill in the forms and have your child return them to Mr Harris in his class or during science lessons. Projects are not due until June.

Premier's Reading Challenge

The Premier's Reading Challenge for 2025 is underway. All Pilgrim students are encouraged to participate in this year’s challenge!

What do I need to do?

To complete the Premier’s Reading Challenge students need to read 12 eligible books including e-books, audio books, class or shared reading, non-fiction books, books read as research for assignments or books in another language. Students in Foundation to Year 6 must read 8 books from the Premier’s Reading Challenge Booklist and 4 personal choice books between now and 5th September 2025.

Every student will need to submit a completed Student Reading Record supplied to your child last week. Spare records are available from Mrs Chesterfield or your class teacher.

Where do I find books from the list?

For a full list of books or to download a spare student record see the following link Premiers Reading Challenge on Compass.

Look for the coloured stickers in the Campus Library or your local public library.

What if my child is still learning to read?

Students may read books, listen to audio books or have someone read a book to them. This includes reading books to your child in languages other than English. If you need help completing the form or checking which books are on the list, please see your child’s class teacher.

This year we are offering a prize to the first class to return all their completed forms. As each child returns their completed student record they will write their name on one of the book spines and add it to the bookshelf display outside Mrs Oleson’s class.

Premier's Reading Challenge Coordinator

Literacy Pro Reading Words Challenge: Year 2 - Year 6

Pilgrim School is participating in the Scholastic Literacy Pro Reading Words Challenge in Term 1. Prizes are allocated to schools with the most collective words read. When a student passes a Literacy Pro quiz after reading a Lexile book or eBook, the number of words in the book is added to their total. There are over 4000 books in the Campus Library that have been lexiled so there are plenty of books to choose from! Lexile books in the Campus Library are identified by a pink sticky dot on the book’s spine. The competition began on 4th March and closes on 24th March.

Learning Assistance Program (LAP)

The Learning Assistance Program (LAP) is a wonderful way to be involved in the wider community of your school as a volunteer, with a focus on student wellbeing. Students and volunteer mentors meet at the same time, during one lesson, once a week. They are carefully matched to build upon individual student’s strengths, interests and abilities.

LAP is always one to one, builds self-esteem and confidence, focuses on wellbeing and builds positive relationships.

Year 5 & 6 Aquatics Adventure

What an incredible few days our Year 5 and 6 students had at Aquatics!

The Year 5s started with an important water safety session on the beach before grabbing their boogie boards and hitting the waves for some fun in the surf.

The Year 6s had two jam-packed days of adventure, taking on surfing, kayaking, stand-up paddleboarding, and snorkeling. A special shoutout to the group Mrs. Spencer followed—every student managed to stand up while surfing! What an amazing effort!

It was wonderful to see students stepping outside their comfort zones, taking on new challenges, and making great memories with their friends.

The river was crystal clear, with tiny silver bream darting through the water and a graceful family of black swans gliding by. One of the instructors even shared that a friendly seal sometimes plays under the bridge—what a special place to explore!

A big thank you to the staff and instructors who made this experience so special for our students. We can’t wait for next year’s aquatic adventures!
