Building Vocabulary

During our Literacy lessons throughout this term we have had a focus on building the children’s vocabulary. Expanding their vocabulary, not only improves the children’s oral language but also their writing and comprehension.

We are establishing the 3 Tiers of Vocabulary, Tier 1 are everyday words, Tier 2 are more robust and creative words and it is here where the children’s vocabulary becomes more sophisticated and Tier 3 are more topic specific and technical words.

Tier 2 words are analysed with the children using a word map to develop a full understanding of the meaning.
