Hospitality and Food Technology

Year 8 are enjoying learning about food waste and food sustainability as part of the OzHarvest FEAST (Food Education and Sustainability Training) program which explores the issue of food waste and its environmental impact, healthy eating and basic cooking skills. These budding chefs created dishes that not only targeted food waste but were a delight to the taste buds! The Technology Units in Year 8 are a rotation, so all the students can look forward to building their cooking skills this year!

Year 12 Hospitality attended one of our favorite local hospitality establishments on an industry excursion. Chef Piper at Hey Rosey on Summer Street welcomed us for a talk and tasting. Highlighting the challenges and possibilities in the contemporary hospitality scene, Chef Piper served up a range of fresh and locally sources dishes for the students to try.

Social Science Excursion to Orange City Mazda

Students in Commerce, are currently looking at consumer and financial decisions. Last week our class and one of the other Commerce classes walked down to Orange City Mazda to prepare for our assessment, which involves ‘purchasing’ our first car. The task requires us to write a report to compare various car options.

Our trip to Orange City Mazda was invaluable. We were met at the entrance by Ben Davis, the Dealer Principal, who took us through the most important things to consider when looking to buy a car; aspects such as how many kilometres the cars had, the paint job across the panels, tyre pressure and of course, the interior.

Ben also taught us important things that are often missed when purchasing a car like checking the engine oil, whether or not the car has been written off, and where to find the VIN number.

With the information we learnt on this excursion, we feel that we are now able to buy our first car and to complete our assessment to the best of our abilities.

A big thank you to Ben and Kyle from Orange City Mazda for having us!
