Lots of Socks Day

Thursday 28 March

Lots of Socks Day – Thursday 28 March

On Thursday 28 March, everyone at FPS is encouraged to wear coloured, mismatched, bright, long, short – or any other combination of socks – to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day (WDSD). It is a day where people all around the world celebrate the lives and achievements of people with Down syndrome, creating a global voice, advocating for the rights, inclusion, and wellbeing of people with Down syndrome.

Why ‘Lots of Socks?’

At FPS, we hold a Lots of Socks Day. The idea behind the ‘Lots of Socks’ initiative is acceptance of all our differences, and what makes us unique as an individual. Socks come in all shapes, sizes, and designs, just like each of us. Children understand what socks are, how they look and what they are for, and children understand that no two socks are the same.

Lots of Socks is a campaign to create conversation about diversity, uniqueness, inclusion and acceptance. On this day, teachers will plan activities around the concept of inclusion, and how we can all help each other to feel included.

What is Down Syndrome?

Our bodies are made up of millions of cells. In each cell, there are 46 chromosomes. The DNA in our chromosomes determines how we develop. Down syndrome is caused when there is an extra chromosome, so people with Down syndrome have 47 chromosomes in their cells instead of 46. The extra chromosome is number 21, which is why Down syndrome is also known as trisomy 21.

We are looking forward to seeing lots of socks on 28 March!
