The Premier's Reading Challenge aims to encourage a love of reading for leisure and pleasure in students, and to enable them to experience quality literature. It is not a competition but a challenge to each student to read, to read more and to read more widely.

The Premier's Reading Challenge (PRC) is available for all NSW students in Kindergarten to Year 9.

The 2024 Challenge kicked off Monday 26th February and closes Friday 23rd August (midnight) for students.

The Challenge involves over 300,000 students from Kindergarten to Year 10 and more than 2100 government, non-government and home schools. The NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge book lists open doors to a rich collection of children’s literature representing a range of books including fiction, non-fiction, picture books, poetry and drama, and include a wide variety of Australian authors.

K-2 students only need to read 30 books while Years 3-10 only need to read 20 between the 26th February and 23rd August. It is a wonderful initiative that I encourage all students to be a part of. Kindergarten, Year 1 and Year 2 students will complete the challenge with their classroom teacher through the books that are read to them on a daily basis. All other students who would like to participate will need to see Miss Bremner for their login in details.

St Philomena’s subscribes to Worldbook Online which is the online version of the well known Worldbook Encyclopaedia series. The subscription is open to all students.

Our World Book subscription allows us to give you and your family access to this valuable reference source at your home computers 365 days a year, 24 hours a day. World Book Kids—is based on World Book’s award winning Discovery Encyclopedia and is designed to give younger students, ESL students and reluctant readers a rewarding online learning experience. The site illustrations, diagrams and maps enrich more than 2,000 articles selected for appeal and relevance.

World Book Student—forms the foundation of an expansive reference database that includes over 40,000 encyclopedia and reference articles, thousands of links to outside web sites selected by World Book editors and contributors. It also includes an extensive Dictionary and Atlas plus audios, visuals and animations.

World Book Advanced—tailored for the needs of older students, it includes encyclopedic content, integrates primary and secondary source databases plus more than 5,500 e-books in a single search, over 700 e-books can be downloaded to e-readers and iPads, and a wealth of research tools that allow students to customise and save their work.

Please remember that login and password information is for students and their families only, and extending this information to people who are not part of our school community could result in loss of at-home access for our students.
