Learning Update
Presented at the Governing Council meeting in week 10
In the 13 block Foundation students have enjoyed learning new sounds and they have started to use this knowledge to read and write simple words. Year one students have been learning digraphs in phonics and how to use adjectives in their sentences in writing. In maths, we have continued our focus on numbers, with year one students being challenged with higher numbers. We have started our history unit looking at what makes us special and our families.
In the 3 block, year one and two students have been consolidating their phonics knowledge and moving into more complex and alternative ways to write the differing ways that each sound makes. We have been looking at some interesting texts and practising writing some simple and more complex sentences using conjunctions and focussing on the vocabulary within a chosen text.
In maths, we continue to count in a variety of ways, focus on our place value understanding of higher numbers, and are working on partitioning numbers in a variety of ways.
This term the primary years students have been learning about persuasive writing in English. We have studied the structure of persuasive texts as well as looking at relevant language features that make a strong persuasive text.
In maths, the students have been learning about place value, partitioning and addition and subtraction with a particular focus on vertical algorithms.
For CPC and health this term we have been learning about keeping safe and how to recognise early warning signs. In HaSS this term we have been working on geography with a particular focus on mapping and significant parts of Australia.
It has been a busy term and we are all very proud of the efforts of the year five cohort in completing NAPLAN.
We have been continuing our work through English units. Year four students will be using their work on narrative structure to write their own chapter for a novel. Year fives are enjoying reading fantasy texts and year sixes are moving from analysing short stories to units where they will be investigating techniques to use in their own written short story.
In HaSS, students are still working on geography units, and year five students will soon be inquiring about geographical challenges in Australia. Year six students have been working together to compare two Asian countries to investigate diversity.
Classes have finished their IBL sessions on visual arts and will start to create their pop artwork in class soon.
Junior Primary students have been playing cooperative games with a focus on learning to work effectively as a member of a team to support and encourage others, share equipment, adhere to rules and respect different capabilities. Primary students have been examining the benefits of physical activity to health and wellbeing.
All classes have been learning about ‘Sakura” which is cherry blossom, as it is the beginning of spring and the cherry blossom season in Japan.
Younger students have also been learning numbers and actions to help remember them. They are also practising how to say their age in Japanese.
The science focus area for this term has been Earth and Space.
Foundation students have enjoyed learning about the weather and the seasons. They have particularly enjoyed the activities where we looked at what to wear and what activities to do depending on the type of weather.
Year one and two students have developed a basic understanding about the Earth, Sun and Moon. They have also been looking at the patterns in our sky and have been spending time outside learning about shadows.
Year three and four students have been investigating where their local water comes from, alongside learning about the natural water cycle. They will end the term completing a variety of investigations where they will be testing water and creating water filtration systems.
Year five and six students have been learning about our star’s personality (size, colour, age, temperature), alongside other suns personalities and the basic features of celestial objects within our solar system (moons, asteroids, comets, meteorites, etc).
