From the Classroom

 News from 5/6

Our Grade 5/6 students have worked incredibly hard on their Inquiry projects, researching their assigned planets in depth. They have already begun proudly presenting their findings to the class. We are so impressed by the effort and teamwork they have displayed throughout this project.

We’ve also finished reading our class novel, Once by Morris Gleitzman. It was a hit with the students, who experienced a wide range of emotions while reading it. They connected deeply with the story and its characters, feeling everything from hope to sadness.

Here are a few reflections from our class about the book:

"The book, Once, was a roller coaster to read. It had happy and sad moments. It left on a bit of a cliffhanger but it was interesting and a good book to read. 5/5 stars." - Annabelle

"It was an absolutely amazing story. I recommend you to read it once you are 10 years old. 5/5 stars." - Brandon

"I really like the characters, Barney and Felix. There were sad and happy moments. The end kind of had me crying. I would recommend for ages 10 and above. 5/5 stars." - Aimee

"This book was very good. I would recommend it to anyone who likes history. 4/5 stars." - Sully

"It was a pretty good book. It was sad in the end. I liked the plot of the book and the part where they left the train. I also liked the part where Barney had the kids in his care." - Sophie S

In maths, we’ve been tackling some challenging logic puzzles related to the order of operations. These puzzles required students to write mathematical expressions for problems involving multiple operations, think critically, eliminate incorrect answers, and use their reasoning skills to find solutions.

As the term comes to a close, we hope everyone enjoys a well-deserved holiday! We look forward to an exciting and busy final term ahead!

What's happening in 3/4

What a wonderful time we had on Monday when we were able to watch a preview of 'The Wild Robot' at the cinema. It was interesting for the students to notice the differences between the novel and the movie and how the novel is able to incorporate a lot more detail.

This Thursday our unit on weather and climate will conclude with our Unit Expo where the students will share their islands and the various climates they have. They will entice you to visit with their persuasive brochures and even offer you some of the special currency used on the island.

We hope to see you there at 3.00pm Thursday!

News in 1/2s

The past 2 weeks have been filled with lots of fun, hands-on learning!

To finish off Inquiry, we have been busy designing, constructing, and building an arcade game to conclude our inquiry unit on sustainability. Throughout this unit, the students have been learning the importance about the three R's being recycling, reducing and reusing. We have gathered all recycled cardboard boxes and have been creative in how we can reuse these boxes to create an arcade game. This week, the students were very excited to have Mr. Mulhall come down to the 1/2 area to play our games! We went around the classroom and were able to have a go at playing everyone's fantastic, fun games made from cardboard boxes.

In English, the students have been writing instructions on how to play their arcade game and presenting it nicely. We wrote letters to Mr. Mulhall to invite him to come down to our classrooms to play our games. We have also been exploring a variety of picture books and learning how to connect our personal experiences to an event that happened in the book.

In Maths, the students have been learning about time. We learnt how to read the times half past, quarter to and past. We connected this learning to fractions and how the clock can be divided into fractions to tell the time. We have also been learning about capacity and how to measure capacity using blocks. Capacity has been fun, hands-on learning! The students worked in small groups to estimate the capacity of containers and then correctly measured them.

Fantastic Foundations

What a exciting few weeks we have had in foundation.

ENGLISH

In English we have been exploring what is in a story. We have looked closely at characters, settings and the plot of two well known fairy tales. The three little pigs and Jack and the bean stalk.  While exploring these texts and their elements, we have been able to link them to some fun activities.

These include:

Designing and constructing houses for the three little pigs.

Retelling the stories using finger puppets.

Building beanstalks using various items to reach the castle in the sky.

MATH

We have been exploring money. Foundation have had opportunities to explore the differences of coins and notes and how each have a certain value. We have explored pretend money as well as coins and notes which Mrs Mills and Tracy have bought in.

This week we have put what they have learnt into practice by creating a foundation grocery store.

We had a whole class scavenger hunt, to find items that belong in a grocery shop. With certain clues, we raced around the ELC to find the various items.

We will continue to build upon our money knowledge for the rest of the week by exploring dramatic play area.

Wishing you all a happy and safe holidays.

Mrs Mills

Physical Education

Students have been practising their baton relay changes, finishing off our Athletics unit.
