Art

Term 4, Week 2

Welcome to Term 4 Art

Term 4, Week 2, 2023

I hope that everyone had a restful and enjoyable holiday and enjoyed the cheery Spring weather and all the beautiful colours that we see in nature during the Spring months. My family enjoyed trips to various beautiful gardens and Galleries in both Melbourne and Central Victoria. Victoria has many wonderful exhibitions at our Regional Galleries as well as at NGV Australia and NGV International. All three Regional Cities: Ballarat, Bendigo and Geelong have fabulous old Galleries with great collections of both Australian and International Artwork

Many of the children have also told me how much they enjoyed a trip to see the Tessellar Tulip farm with its beautiful array of coloured tulips stretching over the Silvan hillsides, along with outings to the Dandenong Ranges Botanical Gardens.

Nature and plants have always inspired artists to create and paint. In the Art room we have enjoyed looking at landscapes Spring artworks.

A trip to the Winter masterpieces exhibition of The Pharoah at the NGV has been a highlight for many.

Lots of students have been busy doing their own artwork during the break and have brought in their work to share.  It is wonderful to see how much pleasure many students get out of doing their own Artwork at home and bringing these works in to share with their friends and me. Terrific to know that children are enjoying Art in their spare time and embracing new ideas and the Art in the world around us.

Well done BPS artists.

Units of Art for Term 4

Term four is a long and busy term and a lot of creative activities have been planned for our various levels.

Supporting the skills that the children are developing, students of all levels are regularly introduced to the works of many Artists that are part of our Art History.

Here are a few of the Units that we are doing this term:

*’What is Art?’ How do we define Artwork?

Across the senior grades we have looked at what has traditionally believed to be “Art”. We have explored the idea of “Controversial modern Art’, looking in particular at Blue Poles by Jackson Pollock. Students have then been busy creating their own Pollock style paintings with dribbling, spattering and flicking paint in colour groups to create some original art.

*Puppets, Mask making and Big Personalities! - Collage, drawing and painting.

*Marvelous Miro and the world of Imaginary creatures and animals creating coloured paper cutouts. Using Primary and Complimentary colours for contrast with opposites in shapes, line and 3D forms too.

*Focus on the art elements of line, shape and colour and the work of Miro. Whimsical adventures, negative and positive shapes and forms, fluidity of line and colour highlights for emphasis. Imaginary worlds and beyond in our ‘wonderful treehouse artworks’.

*Collage creations – how we can use papers and card to create artworks using a wide range of skills: Spring landscapes and Still lives in the style of the Impressionists both Australian and European.

*Abstraction and Art - How shapes and repetition of shapes, along with symmetry, asymmetry, split diagonals. How can these ideas be used to create Artworks with a focus on the work of Sonia Delaunay.

*Portraitures of our friends – Looking at the artwork Picasso, Leonardo de Vinci…. portraits, profiles, classic proportion and distortion.

*Portraiture - Expression, gesture, mood and emotions created through line, proportion, colour, form and emphasis. Photomontage, I pad art, drawing and crayon work.

*Focus on the art elements of line, shape and colour and the work of Miro. Whimsical adventures, negative and positive shapes and forms, fluidity of line and colour highlights for emphasis. Imaginary worlds and beyond in our ‘wonderful treehouse artworks’.

*Threads and Textiles: Weaving, fabric collage, colours, textures and fabric designs

*Modelling and 3D construction, making and joining skills, papier mâché, air dry clay, painting and varnishing - imaginary creatures, favourite small animals, individual creations

*Grade Six special end of year activities

*End of year Christmas activities

A busy, creative and exciting term is ahead of us in the BPS Old School Art Studio.
