Term 4, Week 2

Dear Foundation Families,

Wow, the last term of the year already! We can't believe how quickly this year has come and almost gone. It is going to be a massive 12 week term, filled with an abundance of fun activities.

To begin this term we had our Foundation and Grade 6 Buddies excursion to Melbourne Zoo to celebrate the amazing friendships that have been made and laughter that has been shared. We are also very lucky to have some local firefighters come and provide the students with fire safety, and the opportunity to see a firetruck up close. The local veterinarian will also be visiting the Foundation students who will provide the students a fun and interactive learning experience on pet care and safety.

Just a gentle reminder, with the sun out and shining, please make sure your child has their hat or they will have to sit under the safety seat, as well as a water bottle to keep hydrated.

In Literacy we have continued working through the Writing Process and publishing writing for our Writer’s Gifts. The students continue to demonstrate independence in brainstorming ideas, drafting different writing genres and editing punctuation. Our Foundies are always excited when we have our Writer’s Workshop lessons. During our Reader’s Workshop lessons we are reading a variety of fiction and non-fiction Mentor Texts which explore healthy food choices and looking after our bodies. We are continuing to improve our phonological awareness through identifying onset and rime in rhyming pairs of words. Each morning students participate in the Heggergty’s Phonemic Awareness program allowing them to develop understanding with sound parts of words. This includes sound isolation, deletion and substitution.

Maths this term we will be looking further into topics we covered earlier in the year, such as addition, subtraction, time and place value, as well as new topics of money, shapes and division. We started by looking at Australian coins, the features of them and sorting them based on their value. The students then role played their own shop, taking on the role of shopkeeper and setting prices, as well as the customer and purchasing items from other students' shops. The focus of the remainder of the term will be using double digit numbers to extend on the maths topics the students have already been introduced to.

This term for Inquiry our theme is ‘Healthy Body, Healthy Mind’, where we will be looking at how fruits and vegetables are good for us and all the ways we can stay safe.
