Neurodiversity Celebration Week

At Kinross Wolaroi, we are proud to recognise Neurodiversity Celebration Week—a global movement that encourages communities to honour the many different ways our brains learn, think, and experience the world.

What is Neurodiversity?

Neurodiversity refers to the natural variations in the way people’s brains function and how people understand and interact with the world. Approximately one in five people are neurodivergent. These differences are not deficits, they are simply part of human diversity. Each neurotype brings its own strengths, perspectives, and ways of making sense of the world. We embrace and respect these differences, just like any other part of us.

Human diversity means that different brains all contribute valuable strengths to our community. For example, some strengths of neurodivergent learners may include:

  • Creativity
  • Problem solving
  • Unique perspectives
  • The ability to hyperfocus
  • Empathy
  • Innovation
  • Logical reasoning
  • Deep interests and passions.

Why This Matters for Inclusion at School

Celebrating neurodiversity is part of our commitment to creating a school environment where every child feels safe, respected, and supported. Inclusion is not just about supporting individual learning styles; it is also about building a culture where all students can learn, belong and thrive. At Kinross Wolaroi, respect and Inclusiveness guide all we do as a school community. By helping children understand and value diverse perspectives, we support the development of:

  • Empathy – recognising that people experience the world in different ways
  • Respect – valuing the strengths each person contributes
  • Confidence – knowing that their identity and abilities are recognised and valued.

These values strengthen our classrooms, enrich peer relationships, and prepare our students for an inclusive future.

Together with the Learning Enhancement Team and Teachers, we seek to understand and celebrate the diversity of our learners. This includes:

  • Collaborating with young people and their families to design adjustments to support learning
  • Ensuring student strengths are visible and valued
  • Supporting young people to understand their own neurotype in ways that promote self-advocacy and wellbeing
  • Working alongside teachers to use neurodiversity-affirming practices across the school.

Working Together

If you would like to learn more or access resources to support neurodiversity at home, please contact us. Our aim is to continue building a community where every child belongs - exactly as they are.
