Careers and Future Pathways

As the new Careers Adviser it is my pleasure to join JJ. The students are motivated and keen to learn, it is a pleasure to come to work each day.

It has been a flurry of activity in the Careers Space. We have 13 students completing HSC subjects through TAFE, these include Retail, Travel & Tourism, Real Estate, Construction, Plumbing and many others. We had 2 students in term 1 doing TAFE taster courses in Human Services (Nursing) and we have 6 applicants for term 2. 5 year 11 students attended UNSW Leaders Day (see photos) where they were exposed to leadership skills and how to develop and present these. Year 10 has attended 2 Careers Lessons where the development of their own portfolios were discussed and the MyFuture website was introduced as an ongoing resource to develop awareness of prospective careers. We are currently working through a face to face interview with every student in years 10, 11 & 12. This is so that we can prepare the best pathway to develop students and their pathways to increase the chances of successfully heading in the direction of their choosing. In many cases and especially in year 10, this will involve students sourcing an employer to gain Work Experience. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain insight into a career that they are considering with real personal experience in the workplace.

During these school holidays there are (at the moment of writing) 2 school holiday activities which students are encouraged to participate in. One is the Macquarie University open days for years 10, 11 & 12. Another is the Sydney Trains Pre-Apprentice experience. The information is available on the Careers Google Classroom (code: pscqagco). In the July school holidays there is a Hair experience with L’Oreal, also on the Google Classroom.
